856 vs 857 vs Beast vs Animal vs etc

What is the main differentiator for these models? The aluminum triangles frames all look the same (are they?), but there seems to be various combinations of alum swing arm, carbon swing arm and component sets.

856 is a 1996 of a "xc: bike swingarm is pivoted of the back of the seat tube, elastomer suspension
857 is 1997 version of the same bike swingarm pivots of the back of the downtube i think they had noleen shock and coil springs front and rear
dont know much about animal and beasts

I have a small 855 and a small 757 they are close to the same apart from the rear suspention
