Colin,

would it be correct to spec both shocks at 8.5"/2.5" with different spring rates between front and rear ? The spring rates listed by the documents you mentioned would be valid with any other shock from other manufacturers?

Thanks a bunch for your help!

I am certain that the shocks are 209mm (8.23") long i2i and have a shock stroke of up to 50mm (2") for the NR-2, the coil springs are from 89 to 105 mm long and have a "bind" limit compression of 2".

You could go a bit longer with more "sag".  Measuring my medium 4000se, the travel limits of the swing arm result in shock lengths of 130mm – 240mm (hit points) safe is 135 – 235mm.

Yes the spring rates should be valid and constant as it is dependant upon the leverage ratios of the swing arm.

Col.

Again showing my infinite ignorance on this subject, would it be correct to say that I can purchase the same shock for the front and the rear and then just use different spring ratio/air pressure ?

The lower shock mounts are different. The rear shock uses a conical interface to attach to a strut; the front shock has a pivot.

My bike is a K2 4000, the mounts, while of different sizes, are of the same type.

Oh, sorry, I forget that K2 bikes are discussed here as well.

Anyone ever rebuild the old shocks them selves?
