New to me 957
« on: July 15, 2011, 08:14:21 pm »
To make a real long story short.....
bought a 957 in '98....rode it tons
bike was stolen out of garage in 2008
bought a specialized fsr in 2009
miss my Proflex.....bought a used one off ebay this week

Bike is in pretty good condition.  It has 2 dents in top tube near the head tube.  Bike has a Risse rear shock with lockout, 2 cross link forks (1 carbon and 1 aluminum), xtr rear brakes, Chris King hubs and headset, Mavic rims and Shimano drivetrain.  Needs some tlc, but I am pretty stoked to get it running.  I am hoping that it is as fun and comfortable as I remember it being.

Pics and updates to follow.

Thanks,
Casey

Here are some quick pics from teh basement.

Time to get a bushing kit for the carbon fork and maybe a risse shock for the carbon fork.  Bike "feels" great, just like my old bike did.  I like the feel better than my 2008 Spec Stumpy I bought to replace my stolen Proflex.  Hopefully I like the ride like I used to.

Nice 957! The two dents in the top tube would have happened when the Girvin Pro Carbon forks were fitted. The ulm on Girvin cross links mounts lower than on the Noleen cross links and as a result when the forks spin 180 degrees the hinge point/bushing on the top wishbone makes contact with the top tube. To stop the dents happening Proflex fitted rubber bump stops over the top hinge points. I doubt you would be able to find the original bump stops now but a grommet of some description might fit. Anything would be better than nothing I guess.

You must be tall. I had to cut down my seatpost to make it fit comfortably, whereas yours looks like it's barely long enough to hold the seat up high enough.

Thanks :)

I took it for a 12 mile road ride last night.  Fits like an old glove.  I need to give it a tune up and may do a Risse Astro front air shock to replace the front Noleen.  Will put on the Carbon Cross Link, too.  It needs a new rear rim, as the wall thickness is very thin.  Afraid a good grab of the brakes will go through the rim ;D

Chris
It's too short if he can't extend his legs 95% while sitting, and it's too tall if he has to swivel back and forth on his...um...ball-bearings...to pedal the bike. It tends to be pretty obvious if the seat's adjusted wrong.

I'm just commenting on how much higher his seatpost is, that's all. I'm 5'7" and mine looks like this:

Comfort and functionality aside, I always did think it looked a little goofy to have the seat higher than the handlebars. In my experience, Pro-Flexes have too much of a forward weight bias to make it practical to do that anyway, but that could just be me.

I get what you mean. Yes it surprises me how seat heights vary so much between similar height riders. I know theres a rule but personal preference I guess... and of cause some just not setting it right in the first place!
I do set the seat on my 857 heigher as I use it mostly for road work. When the terrain gets difficult the seat goes down a bit. Theres nothing worse than hanging it off the rear of the bike and then not being able to get back over the seat in time. OUCH! I had one pair of shorts that would get hooked on the back of the seat every ride!

I think it's big/4th, but it doesn't matter because I relocated my big chainring to the middle position so I could use all of the rear gears with it. I kept the 22t granny ring in the inner position, and put a bash ring in the outer position. Yes, the chain can handle the jump from 22t to 44t, with a little modification to the front derailleur.
