Spin trispoke wheels
« on: March 12, 2011, 09:14:01 pm »
I am considering picking up a set of the 3 spoke Spins.  From the very little I have been able to find about them, it looks like they made some of carbon fiber and some of fiberglass.  I want nothing to do with the fiberglass version so I want to make sure that I know what I am looking at.  I have run across a couple sets that look to be a grayish color instead of black and don't look like they have a bare braking surface.

Here is an example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130495426201&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I found a set on craigslist that look like these as well.  I am assuming that these are the fiberglass version but I'm not really sure.  Any thoughts?

Ive never heard of any being made of fiber glass as it wouldnt be strong enough. I thought they were all made from carbon firber. The grey colour could just be due to colour of the mix?

I read an article the other day that described the different versions of the wheel and they said that some of them were made of fiberglass and had a tendency to crack.  It was a BMX site and they didn't specify which sizes they were referring to so maybe just the 20" were available in fiberglass.  Of course,  I can't find the article again.  Either way, something looks strange about the gray and I ran across a set on craigslist that were the same color.

Yes strange indeed. i really would not have thought fiber glass would have been strong enough, that surprises me. There is one on this forum who hates spin wheels as he has stories of them cracking but there are others who use them and have had no problems. I think the obvious thing to look for is condition and age. If they look structurely sound and in top condition its your choice. But only go for the carbon fiber construction as it is a material that is designed to be strong.  Fiber glass.....not.

This is where I read about the different wheels.

http://www.vintagebmx.com/community/lofiversion/index.php/t27020720.html

It must have been only the 20" that came in fiberglass.

Has anyone heard of Tag wheels?  They looks similar to the spins but they were available with disc and in different colors. By the looks of it, they wern't in business very long.

Even if you can see woven material, it doesn't necessarily mean anything.  When I was involved with carbon fiber reinforcements in an industrial setting, it wasn't always cf.  The veil we used was still fiberglass but it was sprayed with a powder form of cf to turn it black.  Same goes for the woven roving, it might appear black but it could also be sprayed with the carbon powder.  It is market driven so money matters.  Fiberglass wheels can be equally as strong but will have to be a good deal heavier.  The resin can be what ever makes the most money or we hope, the strongest choice along with the best fiber reinforcement.  I have repaired racing motorcycle fairings that were advertised as carbon fiber that were actually fiberglass colored black.  These were factory racing parts sold out of a reputable shop too.

Let the buyer beware, a lot of the sellers don't even know what they are selling.

Fiberglass is plenty strong. That's what they make polevaulting poles from.

Yep, strength to weight, Carbon Fiber is better by far but both will fail once you exceed design.

Find me a material that doesn't break due to age, wear, abuse, or manufacturing defects, and I'll give you a gold star AND a cookie.

i've got a set of carbon fibre spin wheels had them since 1999 look the part on my xp8 and xpx. the ones to go for are the earlier released ones as indeed these were carbon fibre and were used to get the company its name and reputation before they changed tack and started using fibre glass to cut back on costs. hence they are no longer in buisness. hope this helps

I currently run Spin Tri-spokes on my 4000se, no probs, very laterally stiff and they bear up to :-
a) My weight {100KG with kit!)
b) Bouncing down lots of big hills!

They look pretty black to me.

Also I have a set of Spinergy 4 (8) Blade CF wheels which I have run on the 4000se doing all of the above and also used on the road for a couple of long road trips on my XP-X, also very good and no, before anyone says {again}, I am not concerened about them suddenly "exploding" under me! (famous last words!)

I just picked up a set of spins from craigslist for $100 shipped.  They have the grayish look but they are also very dull so I think polishing them will bring back some shine and darken them up a little.  The front one has a little hop to it but i don't think it will be much of an issue.  The bearings are shot though so I will have to address that.  Has anyone replaced bearings in these before?
