anyone using an XTR rapid rise derailuer??

I'm thinking about picking up a rapid rise dreailuer. Any comments? Good? Bad?  Will it work with non-shimano shifters?  I have sram rocket / attack/ somthing - not esp though.

I've got that setup on my wife's bike. SRAM shifters (8 speed, and I'm not sure which model, but I think they're Attacks), with an XTR rear derailleur that's rapid rise. Works fine. A little counter-intuitive if you're used to shifting the other way, but you get used to it quickly enough.

It works perfectly fine. I've never noticed all that much of a difference with the rapid rise.

Some reason why you want to try R/R XTR. Personally I'd rather push the chain up manually than have a spring assist. Try a standard XT. Why spend the money on XTR, unless you can't live without it. Rich

I have had some trouble trying to use a 34t cassette. I was told the XTR r/r had no trouble at all with the big cassette.  I ordered one from performance bike - if it doesn't work out I can send it back

I don't think that's dependent on the rear derailleur model. At least not on the R.R. vs non R.R. My regular 9-speed XTR rear derailleur works perfectly with my 11-34 cassette. Never had a problem in over 3 years now. Perhaps yours was slightly damaged or the wrong size? You have to have a long cage rear derailleur to work with the 34 tooth cog.

Matno - have you used an XT rear with the 34t?  I currently have a long cage XT.

Matno's right.  All Shimano mtb group from Deore, LX, XT & XTR has been rated to work up to 34 tooth cassette.

How old is your derailleur?  Pre 97/98 Shimano stuff was rated to 32 tooth cassette.  If your got a newer derailleur, you problem is elsewhere.

Good point Jimbo. To fit the 34 tooth cassette cog, you MUST have a 9-speed rear derailleur. ANY of the 9 speed rear derailleurs (Deore, LX, XT, & XTR) should work perfectly with that cassette.

Mine is an XTR, but the XT is no different as far as fit is concerned. I'd be using XT if my brother in law hadn't given me a screaming deal on an XTR.

i have an 8 speed xt long cage, and a 34 big gear, and it works fine, no clearance problems -

i used a 10 tooth G-pulley instead of an 11 and that allots for sufficient room for derailler movement up to the 34.  the 11 was too big and required reversing the b screw in the housing to pull the unit back far enough to fit.  

the 10 is much smaller in diameter and i could keep the standard b screw where it belongs but in most of the way.

So....a ten tooth pulley instead of an xtr der..hmmnn..tough choice - can I pick up a 10 tooth at any shop?

 I have 9spd xt rear der and xt shifter with 34-11 xt cassette. Works fine on my evo but did take some setting up/messing around. Initially problems with the bigger cogs until I figured out that i had to adjust the b screw, tried reversing and jamming a second screw in backwards. Anyway it worked ok, and has been shifting perfectly since. you don't need to change pulley wheels or run rapid rise or xtr although they do work fine. I love the 34 t !!
