Hi

Seeing as we are now officially brothers ( Very rare owners of a 954 ) would it be possible to post a picture of how your front chain shifter is routed down near your crank as mine look like it is different to yours and to be honest yours looks as if it it better routed .Also I have the soft elastomer kit on mine from RDS and may have miss calculated my weight as there seems loads of travel even before they have been run in , not to good with kg but what does your son ride in stone and lbs . I noticed from other posts you have the other kit from RDS too have you tried it out ?

KG's to Pounds conversion: Pounds divided by 2.2 is close enough, i.e. I weigh 200lb divided by 2.2 = 91KG

Hi Colin ,

thanks for the pic , sort of helps , I have that small mount / lug on my frame , I just dont quite understand what happens after that because the cable just cant stretch over to the mech after that without something going on inbetween ?

This is what mine does .

Try a bottom pull mech, it  looks like your outer goes over the top of your front mech where it should be coming under with the outer?

look's to me like its been modified! dont think that top pull mount should be there!!

I think it's a bottom pull anyway if in doubt get a dual pull and route the outer under the bb. Good luck XX

seem's the previous owner was probably having trouble finding the right size mech..my l.b.s told me they no longer supply this size as they all come with those multi size shim's nowaday's....them thing's never stay in place properly so try and get right size off ebay!! remember nice smooth lines with the cables means good shifting and breaking!! notice that i put a little zip tie around the pinch bolt to keep my cable in place...kept catching my foot on the cable ..

The front shifter cable routing on our 954 looks like what Colin and purple gerbil posted...



It's an XT shifter, if that helps at all.

My son weighs about 110 lbs. (50kg or 7.86 stone) and is a beginning rider. I mentioned to Callum at RDS that initially I thought the soft kit would be okay, but now I'm not so sure.
I haven’t tried the standard kit (the only difference is the one “upper” elastomer), because the weather has kept us from doing any riding for “break-in” with the soft kit. If you want to try the stiffer elastomer, send me your address and I’ll ship mine to you.

Your bike is different than any other 954 I’ve seen (graphics, cable routing) so yours may be rare of the rare!  :o

I have had the bike for well over 10 years now and always new it wasnt right but have never seen another one to compare until now , I think what ever the form of 954 you have they are rare .I have the soft elastomers from rds on now and even without the break in period  I have loads of travel ,that is why I was wondering about yours ,  but I am over 6ft and weigh about 14 stone so i think it may well be worth me buying a couple of sets to try out from rds but thanks for the offer .Anyone know from the picture that Trajectory has kindly posted the exact type of mech I should be tapping into ebay for would be much appreciated .

I honestly don't know what type of front derailleur my 954 has - or what it is called anyway. The common factor in mine, Colin's and purple gerbil's bikes is the cable stop welded on the seat tube (at about the same height as the swingarm pivot). I coundn't tell in your photo if your bike had one there. If it does, it should make your swap easy.
As far as riding in nasty weather and mud...
...you Brits are a lot tougher than this poser!

As others have spotted, the routing for that front derailleur cable should come from the bottom up to the cable outer locating lug and then the cable inner should pull down on the derailleur. If that is a "top pull" derailleur then that is why it has been bodged (ahem, modified) to work the other way up, what does the cable seat into?
I'd say the best bet is to replace the front mech with a correct "bottom pull, conventional (bottom) swing" one and reroute the cable correctly.
Shouldn't be too expensive as they're not very popular nowadays.

yeah - get a 656R for a 91kg rider - the RS is for folks 75kg or less.

Just found a bottom pull deore lx in my box of bits , think it may have been the origonal one that was on there so will give it a clean up and have a go .

Thanks all for all the help , the lx mech I had was 28.6 not 31.8 but luckily today my local cycle shop come up trumps for me once again with a near new retro  xt mech , very greatful indeed , so rushed home and just put it on great . Cables look alot better and much smoother action than my previous bodge .
