Rear shock boot

Need your opinions... Are rear shock boots (Lizards skins) a real benefit for my Manitou Swinger 3 Air SPV?  I find conflicting data on this subject... Thanks

Anything you can do to help keep dirt and such out of seals on any shock is of benefit

I've used old umbrella covers - the kind with the hole in the end for the tip - usually they fit perfectly and are more than cheap.
If I have can't locate one, I'll use an old argyle sock, something with a little color and 'flair' -
Many of my older experienced socks come with holes in the ends.

They do get some comments on occasion but I figure that if all the other guy usually sees is the back of my bike,
he should focus his attention more on improving his engine and not my equipment.

my friend uses cut up old inner tubes and zip ties if necessary.

I agree that keeping the crud out is a good idea esp in muddy type conditions.Dont just "wrap and forget" though

I plan on fitting a length of old inner tube to my Swinger Air 3 Way, as I have done on my Noleen's and ODS's (not had a shock failure yet in 10 years!) I also oil the inside of the inner tube to hopefully create a water intolerant zone!

As Kiwi says, don't just forget about it, but it can be left quite a few times between washes if it covers the shock effectively.

The Swinger even has a lip with a recess on the main body to secure a cover to.

Note to self.........Must get a flowery umbrella cover......................

Update: 06/05/08 - Just stripped down the ODS's on my XP-X and removed the inner tube covers; filthy as hell on the outside and the rubber starting to perish, but inside? still a little bit oily and no signs of dirt, shock shafts shiny and clean! This is after a years worth of riding and a year sitting in the garage unused!
New inner tubes fitted and everything slapped with Lithium grease. Should be good for another year at least!

Shock boot kits available from me at just $10 each - <GRIN>
