OZ Bottom Bracket size and recomendations
« on: March 02, 2008, 08:58:57 am »
AS title really, BB started to make grinding noises this week. I dont know whats in, but would guess its a RAce FAce Job, as Swiss Nick fited a Evolve xc crankset to the bike when he had it built.
Superstar componants  SKF or ceramics are getting good reviews on stw. want one that will last years rather than months without monthly strip down and regrease.
If anyone knows the cup size and axle length that will be a start, has to ISIS i guess as itsa  race face crankset.

Bike running well,  snapped a trigger in a small tumble on saturday , went into a bike shop on the way to see a mate and got missold a SRAM attack shifter, I knew it wasnt right when i read the packageing , but thte spotty yoof in the shop assured me it would work. How can it?? i say when it says 2:1 pull rate , oh , it just does he says.........it just doesnt.

if its an isis bb you can wave goodbye to it lasting years im afraid. even the expensive skf tend not to last that long, ive just put an fsa platinum isis in my oz  with a r/f ride chainset instead of the truvativ stylo gxp that i had in b4 as part of my `kill the creak` campaign, its stopped creaking now so im going to live with having to  replace isis bb`s on a regular basis. then again if you find one that lasts a while let me know and ill invest in one, so far i havent found anything that will outlast a good square taper bb!
an oz is for life , not just for xmas!

Agreed on the Shamno UN54 BB lasting years as opposed to months. What size do I need cup and axel length. Would rather order one , get it then take it to the LBS to be fitted

Many Thanks Rob

yeah i agree on good old square taper b/b. my mate purchased a 93 lx back in the day and run it for 2 years in a offroad master 12"
and he caned it.then it was stolen and went missing for 3 years. i found it by fluke being sold for  £10 by local druggy and went about taking it back. anyhow  had it sand blasted and was to idle to remove b/b. and when i did remove it there was my mates name and address in a little
plastic bag wrapped around b/b we always used to do this so we could prove it was ours in such circumstances. anyway i was skint so i pulled
off the side covers clamped it up attached a drill and ran some wd and oil through it to flush it out then packed some black gold grease in it
(remember that stuff) replaced the covers and hey good as new.i rode it for 1 half years then sold it b/b still going. im sure it cant still be going
(or can it)

Some of the early fames were made wrong in the jig and had adjustable BB's fitted from race face ( i think it was).
I bought my frame bare and had a real struggle finding a BB to do the job... (not wanting to fork out a fortune for the race face titanium thingy...)

I think I fitted a 68 110 bb, but had to do some machining of the locking ring and then fitted a plastic ring outside that to keep the crud out...  but as far as I know I am the only one on here to ever have that issue.

so try 73 113.... but if it doesn't workk for you.... start digging through your LBS BB box... and get creative. :-)

Oh... and I fitted my XT level BB (UN72?) in 1999..... and it is still going strong...

Hammer.
