My new purchase...
« on: December 02, 2007, 05:17:31 am »
a nice 555 (minus wheels). Seller offered it to me for £60 plus postage.

Can anybody tell me anything about the Girvin telescopic forks?

Nice seatpost! (Makes me want to go dig up my Clash & Ramones albums...)

This may not be relevant, but I bought a 455 new and it had RST forks on it. They weren't even rebranded Girvin. They were a squishy elastomer setup; soft in the summer and hard in the winter!

That would make a sweet SS commuter bike...

I bet everyone of us was watching that one !

Not a bad price at all, just watch how much it costs you to rebuild it though.555's do come up well, and are rather nice to ride when you replace the elastomers.

Yes, I am very curious about that seatpost. If it is a USE-titanium, that is the hidden jewel in it.

Having a few problems taking the pedals off, they have seized onto the cranks (i need the pedals they are Shimano XTR clipless ones), need to get prof help to take them off. I am not sure of the timescale yet. So think its best to not sell the bike for the moment, Sorry for wasting your time.

oh well... can't complain as he didn't make reserve and was only offering it to highest bidder (me).

If they're the original spec for the 555 (and look like they are), they are Girvin ATF..........nowt very good, elastomer shock with about an inch or so of travel.

I had this problem on my Marin, used it for a few years and then went to put SPD on it, and couldn't get the old peds off! rounded off a spanner before I got sensible, applied thread penetrator, left it for days and then heated the crank and froze the centre of the pedal, It came off, but I reckon I took a few thou' of ally out of the crank threads!

Moral of the story? Oil everything on a new bike especially dissimilar metal interfaces!

Tell him you'll have it anyway! He can always remove the entire cranks to post it!

Looks like a cool item for your PRO~FLEX Museum!
