Rear disc-brake adapter for EVO
« on: July 31, 2007, 12:19:13 pm »
Sorry for the stupid question, but here goes...

I thought the Hammerhead adapter was needed for aluminum swing-arm EVO frames only if there was no mounting provision at all on the swingarm.

When I bought my EVO frame years ago, it had a disc-brake adapter on the swingarm already installed.  I assumed this was a standard part.

My father-in-law liked my EVO so much, that when I saw a Flying Monkey up for sale locally, I bought it for him.  It doesn't have the adapter.  It does have the same mounting holes that my EVO does in which the adapter bolts into.

So I need to buy a Hammerhead for it?  Or should I contact Ironhorse to see if they have the same adapter I have on my EVO?

Thanks

As far as I know, ALL of the EVO style frames with aluminum swingarms have built in disc mount holes. I don't think I've ever seen one without them. Just bolt the brake right on. Do you happen to have pics so we can know exactly what you're talking about?

I got a response from Mike at IronHorse/K2 and he says that I need the 5996 adapter, which they no longer make.

So, it appears I do need a Hammerhead.  I wonder if a local machine shop could make one for me?

I didn't mind the hydraulic rim brakes that it came with, but my father-in-law wants discs.

I just took the adapter off the evo and can see that it is custom made to fit the contour of the swingarm.  I may just try to find a local machine shop and ask them if they can duplicate it for me.  Since the Hammerhead is nearly $100 with shipping, I wouldn't mind having something custom made for me if it doesn't cost too much more than that.....

YES! Interested!

That picture helps a lot.  You have the adapter mounted to the holes that are already there.

So help me understand.... What are the mounting holes in the end of the swingarm for if they're not for standard disc brakes?  Did another non-standard brake system work with it?

As far as I'm aware those holes are for mounting
K2's own disc adaptor not for mounting a caliper
direct.

I can do my adaptor for $50 including shipping to the U.S,no guarantee on this item as its a home made unit
though it worked fine for me whilst I was using it.

sorry the exchange rate is very poor for you at the moment.

Simon: That price sounds very reasonable, but I'm going to see if I can have one made locally first.

Since I already have a stock K2 adapter from my EVO, I'm hoping a shop can use it as a template to make a copy.

Thanks for all the pictures of the home-made adapters.  The nice thing about the stock 5996 is that it wraps around the swingarm end, and fits very snugly.

My 2000 Evo had disc mounts as part of the aluminum swing arm.  My friend's 2002 Disco Monkey had disc mounts that had to be bolted on the swingarm.

I have seen Disco Monkeys (orange frames...I think) with aluminum swing arm and without disc brake tabs.  Always wondered about that.  I guess they had disc adapter mounting holes?

If you live anywhere near a REI, they may have the part.  I just bought a replacement der hangar for my '99 4000 back in April.

I have a 99 3000 and recently picked-up a pair of rims with discs and have been looking for some type of adapter for the rear.  The one Simon shows looks good, although I would like to checkout REI first.  Did the units at REI have a part number or manufacturer I could reference ?
THANKS !!

Reviving this very old topic becuase I have some news.

I happened to be riding my road bike on Vashon Island, former home of K2 Bike HQ, and happened to notice an old EVO frame in the weeds.  Low-and-behold - it had the adapter I needed, and it was in fine shape.

So, after sitting for a few years, I was able to finally re-mount the rear Avid disc brake onto my Evo.  I'll be taking it to Whistler Bike Park next month (September) and put it through its paces.
