Proflex 656 Suspension
« on: August 09, 2006, 01:32:46 pm »
I have an unused Proflex 656 and both set of  elastomers are shot. I have e-mailed Risse and Rapid Descent Scotland but have not received a reply. Are there any other options on a replacement suspension?

Thanks for your help,

Jcat

Rapid Descent will get back to you - try them again. I have bought from them before and their product is very good. Callum from there checks this forum regularly too.

there is a sticky above relating to a shock which is available for the 656.Up until that was posted we all thought the 656 owner was stuck with elastomers

Risse most likely will not reply to your email. Callum at RDI is working on elastomers and is looking for a buyer. If you are in the U.K., that would be your best bet.

Risse makes a good product, but tuning may be an issue for the front shock. The Genesis is the only shock made anymore that will fit your vector, but in my case needed to send back to the factory for softening twice already. I will prevail in the end. Thier rear shock is very good out of the box. But for the front, I would either find a slider, or pick up some new elastomers.

If the front is a Vector then a spring conversion should be possible?
I've got a Speedspring coil modded ODS on the Vectors on my XP-X (856) (and the back end).
I thought Callum was doing these...?
Maybe he's on holiday atm? It's the prime vacation time in the UK.
All you need is a bottom coil collar ("tophat") and a spring about 75-83mm long rated at about 200lb/inch (for a 200lb rider).

(Junkster made a very good collar from a headset ball race!)

Thanks for your help everyone. I am still working on getting a hold of Rapid Descent Scotland. I have also called K2 and the service representative said he will see what he can dig up and give me a call.  I am a new rider and not quite as familiar with some of the terminology and parts being referenced. Is it possible to replace the front suspension with modern forks like Rock Shocks?  (I live in the US).

Thanks,

Jonathan

yes you can put a telescopic fork onto the 656.The girvin vector is a 1 inch fork but I think the 656  will have a head tube which will accept a 1 and 1/8 fork.Your options for upgrading the vector are either new elastomers ,a risse shock to suit the vector fork,a spring kit with an ods unit(a simple damper fitted to 1996 856 and some other 1996 models).

If I can’t find a spring conversion kit I think I will go with a telescopic fork. Can anyone recommend a decent beginner/intermediate fork for under $300 to replace my girvin vector?

JCAT,theres a nice noleen front shock on ebayUS that should bolt right up to your fork, you should be able to get it pretty cheap, why settle for a teliscopic fork when you already have one of the best forks ever made(IMO) as for the rear, have you sorced any elastomers yet?  good luck getting that 656 on the trails its to nice of a bike to be laid up cause of suspension probs. the guys here will get you straitened out.

Thanks Matt and Kiwi for the reply.

K2 sent me rear elastomers for free. They were very helpful and now my rear suspension is good to go.  There are several Noleen shocks on ebay. Will the "Noleen Nitrogen Shock" fit my 656?

I just called K2 and asked if they could help me out. At first, the tech said he didn’t think he would be able to help me. After some talking he asked for my address and said he would see what he could do. Five days later the elastomers arrived at my doorstep.

that shock is perfect for the girvin vector.I presume he means a 956.My only qualm is I recall the 956 actually had a  "girvin crosslink" rather than the vector that the other 7 and 856 models
