Main swingarm pinch torque spec?, x57
« on: May 07, 2006, 12:49:54 pm »
Hi.  Running into all kinds of snags reassembling my bike.  Such as removing old thread loctite.

Can't seem to find the torque number for the main swingarm pinch for my 757.  It just lists "varies".

Anyone have the number?

Thanks!

If it's anything like the pinch bolts on my '98 5000, you just tighten them until the pivot (when disconnected from the shock) swings slightly slower than "freefall" when dropped. Kind of subjective, but the idea is that if it's too loose, you'll get play, and if it's too tight, you'll restrict motion...

But don't believe everything I say, I recently stripped my BB down and greased it all up, only to find out that the annoying creak I've been experiencing for the past several months was coming from my saddle! Grrr... >:(

Oh well, it was an excuse to tear something apart and rebuild...  8)

thanks for your reply.  That was what i suspected too, thinking from a standpoint of how it is supposed to work.  just wish the 98 manual had numbers so i can think less.

By the way, dremel wirebrush is a godsend to remove old loctite.

Another problem...  Or I wasn't being clear enough.

Let me clarify:
2x pinch bolts, pinching main pivot = what torque setting?
1x main pivot bolt = 175 lbs/ft

Is that what you were talking about.

I am having problems tightening the main pivot to 175 lbs/ft, because the metal nut/bushing on the other side follows the movement of the bolt.

Any ideas?

ok.. found this:

Ok, I get it now, this is how you do it:

"Tighten the pinch bolt that secures the threaded pivot axle
to the point where the pivot axle can not spin.

8. Reinstall the main pivot bolt and torque to 250 in-lbs.
9. Make sure both pinch bolts are loose.
10.To adjust the pinch bolts properly, detach the seatstay
from the swingarm. Hold the swingarm up and tighten the
pinch bolts evenly. The pinch bolts should be tightened
until the swingarm (with the rear wheel installed) falls
slowly downward when released.
11.Reinstall the seatstay bolts and tighten to 100 in-lbs."

Note that the torque spec is completely different, than from the "general" main pivot spec of the 98 manual...

Just to check  ???
you don't happen to have the torque wrench
set in Lbs/Ft instead of Lbs/in  ???,
your earlier posting said Lbs/Ft, whoooh thats
way OTT, more than you require on car wheel nut,

as for the bolt you require, its pretty much standard,
should be able to get one at a local hardware store.

Simon.

Ps what loctite are you using, shouldn't go off at all
during assembly, use medium strength ie 242 (blue).

AHH yes 175 ft lb is actually more than twice the torque for a bmw 535 wheel nut!

That bearing cup held up pretty good then. Can you get the bolt out?

Maybe an easy out into the head would work. You could call a motorcycle repair shop to see if they can help you. You could dremel off the head but may damage the cup. Be careful.
