Proflex 656 Damper - update

Hello all - I posted a thread a while back about Proflex 656 rear shock upgrade. After browsing and searching this forum for a while I found that I'm at least the third person who asked this.

I emailed Risse directly and after a few rounds of emails, Kevin of Risse Racing told me that the Genesis damper for the Attack frame will work for the 656.

Apparently the 1996 model (well there's really no 1996 frame that called Attack, I gather they really meant the 656) needs the freedom plate to work.

If this is true, it's certainly good news for those of us who are stuck with the 656.

I've also seen someone who put an Eiback spring on it.  I'll keep you posted about the results once it comes in the mail!

Hey there Supernova,

 That is good news. I just recieved a Genesis for my crosslink. It fit perfect, had all the bushings necessary, and only weighs 235 grams(comprared to 510 grams for the smartshock. Very easy $198 to spend.

 But man is it stiff. I have not figured out if it just needs to be broken in or there is a hiden damper adjustment.

Terry, there's no hidden damper. The only way to "adjust" the Genesis is to change the valves (Risse will do it based on your weight, bike, and riding style - I'm not sure if it's something that you can do yourself), or to change the oil weight.

That is what I thought, but it is really stiff. If it does not loosen up I will send it back. It feels like it has axle grease for fluid. [smiley=disbelief.gif]

Thanks folks. I just placed an order today. I looked at the picture on Risse's web site:


It looks about right. Seems to be a pretty straightforward installation too.

I'm looking to upgrade the front suspension also. Seems like there are some Noleen forks on Ebay that are rather inexpensive. What do you guys recommend for modest XC riding?

dont ask us were biased....if you are keen to kep it in the family a crosslink is the go,otherwise a noleen mega air is also good.Dont get anything with too long a travel,100 mm will be fine,upgrade to discs easier!
