simons old oz, the new build!
« on: September 23, 2005, 06:34:22 am »
finally got everything sorted with the frame i bought off simon, apart from the forks which will be replaced at the earliest opportunity im over the moon with it. i thought my old xpx rode well till i tried the oz today, theres no comparison, its awesome! im not sure if its the risse shock ( probably is) but the rear felt buttery smooth over everything, i think i must be a bit of a porker compared to simon cos if you check out the first pic i managed to bottom the back end out! (must invest in a shock pump). it was also nice to be the envy of the car park cos everyone that noticed it stared at it, gt idrive riders, spesh riders, orange riders, giant riders everyone ogled it!!  coooool,  oh yeah and i also managed to fall off the bloody thing  doh!!!

Glad you like it [smiley=nod.gif],
bikes looking great, yes they are a real head turner,
fall off it first time out,got to laugh [smiley=laughing.gif] no damage I hope, plus you've got it dirty,do you realise how long I spent cleaning it
when I new you'd won it ;)
yes the shock was set for my son's weight so
get yourself a shock pump and invest in a
accu fill valve adaptor for the shock (CVI sell them)
makes adjusting the shock pressure a little easier,
my son's yet to try his new build out in anger but I'm sure he'll like it,
Simon.

Jeffhop,

That is one sweet bike you got there! [smiley=nod.gif]

Once you clean the mud off you got to put it on the scales for posterity. ;)

Rode it hard and put it away wet. Thata boy! [smiley=laughing.gif]

You definitely need a shock pump, BUT, you SHOULD be able to bottom the shock out. If you don't ever get it to the bottom, you're wasting travel that you could have. The recommendations I've read (mostly from shock manufacturers or magazine writers) are that you should bottom out (barely) on solid hits (not just massive hits, but the biggest that you encounter on an "average" ride). If you're bottoming out hard enough to feel a strong jolt, add air! If you just barely feel it occasionally, that's perfect.

I tried to set up my new Swinger 3-way air shock today during a break from work, but with only 15 minutes I barely started to get acquainted with it! Maybe tomorrow I'll have more time. Enjoy your Risse, I love mine. Bike looks beautiful, by the way!

the bike weighs approx 27 1/2 lbs according to my scales, thats probably down to the fact that ive just put some manitou mars air forks on it that are approx 1 3/4 lbs lighter than the ones i originally built it with. ill have to see how they go as regards to the build quality but im not an extreme sort of rider if you know what i mean. anyway here are a couple more pics ( its clean again simon  [smiley=laughing.gif] )

Hi Jeff,
great looking bike. Just out of interest I have a Topeak pocket pump shock for £14 inc postage if you like. It is a mini one and pumps easily to 250psi. Has a frame mount and presta adapter for it's shreader head. Comes packaged and in mint condition. Don't really need an air shock pump at present do I? ;o)

Let me know if you are interested and bung a cheque down to me sometime.
cheers

Hey Jeff,

Just a couple questions.
What kind of rear brake is that? Never seen that model before.

And what is the travel and/or reduction hieght of your new fork?

I think the queen has some serious competion. [smiley=nod.gif] [smiley=nod.gif]

It's a Promax mechanical.

you are correct it is a promax mechanical, as soon as i can afford another hope then it will be getting upgraded i was going to post a question on here about what size rear disc i can use with the hammerhead adaptor, its fitted with a 150mm at the moment. is it safe to use an adaptor for a 20mm bigger disc? i like to have a sharp rear brake. the forks are only 80mm travel but are seriously light (1350 grms on the wifes digital scales) and they seem quite plush not bad for £60 off ebay they look hardly used at all. i did want longer travel forks but managed to put a bid in for these after having a few too many beers   [smiley=laughing.gif]  but its better than what i did last year which was spend £200 on a set of wheels for my road bike which i didnt even need ;D the wife was none too happy about that

You should be alright fitting a slightly bigger disc,
though the disc mount adaptor is a homemade aluminium mounting,it has only been used with hydraulic Formula and Hope brakes using 140 & 145mm rotors (no problems though),
don't fit a larger rotor if you have to fit another adaptor to the one your already using, couldn't guarantee it would cope,
Simon.

ahh i see, mighty fine job you did of the mount i thought it was a production model! i think its going to have to be a case of , get a caliper and buy a disc to fit. im looking for another hope xc4 to match the front but i suppose any hope will do as long as its got the same lever and reservoir (im a fashion victim  lol ). im also going to look towards putting certain things on a diet to lose a bit more weight off it, such as cassette, seatpost, stem, chainset and inner tubes.i reckon i can lose maybe another 1/2<3/4 lb with any luck. i think ive got the worlds fattest inner tubes!
