Big K2 Freerider; my new project, first impression

Yesterday I received the disco monkey frame which I bought from ebay.

Here the first impression:

A mz junior t fork and a 5th element damper is ordered on ebay.

A new project is born to complete my proflex family.

And I get an errection, when thinking of the 24inches dh wheelset.

 the jr.t looks tough. I was thinking of putting a big fork and 24"rear  on my evo, but unfortunately the seat tube cracked, so it is now retired . Which makes me wonder if it's tough enough for freeriding [i was doing 5' drops to flat and a bit higher with a tranny, but nothing too extreme]. I wish that k2 had just beefed up the evo design for freeriding instead of farting around with the tirade. If it stays in one piece you'll have a great time with that bike!

You know, there is just something really cool about the way that freeride/dh bikes look. I've always wanted to build one, even though I really don't have a place anywhere near here to ride it. I would have to travel at least a couple hours, but I may have to build one just because they are really cool.

anyway, if it sounds like I like your bike, you're right! have fun with it!

The i2i of the 5th element is 220mm. So the back will come nearly an inch higher.
This is to equal the high front a bit and is the only way to realise 170mm travel on the back. With the nr2 it has just 100mm. Much to less!!
And with a bit more sag then normal on both, the front and rear, the hight of the bottom bracket will come a bit lower.

Unfortunately I will have to travel about 1 and a half hours to the next bike park, too. But I think it's worth it.

Sounds like a perfect match to me!!!. The only thing I found when I mounted my 8.5 inch Swinger was more brake jacking on downhills. So I just shifted my bodyweight slightly more over the rear wheel, and WHAT A RIDE. When climbing the rear settled into a nice position of about 1 inch of sag when the threshold pressure was right.

Hurry up and finish it! I am curious to hear your ride report.

Looks like fun. Man, I'll bet that rear shock is LIGHT with that "air" spring on it... (Wouldn't ride with it though!)

Do you have a 24" front wheel as well? If so, what is the point of that? I don't think I've ever seen one, so I'm just curious...

Dennis, you wouldn't be alone if you got a downhill rig. I saw a guy here in the Bronx the other day with at least 12" of suspension! It looked like an Armageddon or something similar. Crazy huge travel with an unbelievably relaxed head tube angle and massive stanchion tubes. I'd have taken a closer look, but it was crowded and I was riding with my wife. Sweet looking ride, even if he was riding it at Orchard Beach (which is almost totally flat with no "drops"). I saw him carrying it up some stairs, so he was probably planning to ride down the other side as soon as the cops at the top looked the other way...

Yes I know about the air shock prob.

The spring is still missing. I just had to order a new one, as the 5th element I bought on ebay had none. That's why it was that cheap.
The i2i is 225 mm. So the rear comes about 3.5 cm higher than normal. The bottom bracket is 2 cm higher than with the NR2 shock. But it will come a bit lower while driving, cause I tend to drive with a lot of sag.

Today I did a little ride including some steps with the NR 2 in it. Wow! So soft (at least on the front)

And Yes! It is a 24 inch front wheel.
It's just because I had a pair of 24 inch Alex DH rims on stock, which were quite useless up to now. And so they got their profession now.
And the front is high enough. It would have been mad to ride with a 26 / 24 combi. And 26 / 26 would mean a much higher bottom bracket. Too high. Much too high.

And as I like porno! ... Nobody has 24 on the front, but I have!

What else? Ah! The rear mud guard on my 5000 is custom made by myself.
It's made of carbon. And it's just a mud guard for the rear shock. As you can see in my gallerie I like working with carbon. The last project was my carbon saddle/post combi. Very light. Just 240 gramms. Hmm, "tune" has a seat / post combi made of carbon which just has 115 gramms. But unfortunately it costs 380 euros in Germany and beeing a german company I think it will cost more for other countries. That's why I made it myself.

hey, woodman makes some light fenders that might work nicely.  they fit on the v-brake studs too.  check 'em out.

1. Who the f... is woodman? Does he have a url or something? I'm interessted in his parts.

2. Unfortunately there's no pic of the front fender. And I doubt one can build carbon front fenders for 10 $ Can. Even the material costs more than those 10 bugs. Let's think: 1 square meter of carbon with 200 gramm/squaremeter is about 50 euros. With the scrap you are producing and because you need at least 2 layers of carbon you need some 1/5 square meter. This is 10 Euros (maybe a bit less if you don't produce much scrap). The epoxy resin (if you take a good one according aircraft standards) costs 25 to 30 Euros per kg. You need about 50 to 80 gramms (with the scrap)

That's why I doubt it can be real carbon! ... Ah! Just seen he talks about "carbon looking". OK! That's bull... I hate carbon look! All I build is real carbon!

Some guys allready asked me if I could build some carbon parts for them. After I calculated the price no one wanted to have those parts from me. Even if I only demanded 5 Euros per workinghour (who wants to pay for 10 to 50 hours?!?).
