Leaky Noleen Mega Air rear shock
« on: December 02, 2004, 12:36:08 am »
I bought a new 2001 Razorback frame (warehouse clearance?) this year.  The rear shock has been losing air right from the get go.  I weigh about 165 lb, so I set the pressure from between 140 and 150 psig.  Every ride I'd lose between 50 and 75 psig.  I noticed that when I unscrewed the schraeder valve cap I heard a little puff of air escaping, so I chased the schraeder valve threads and retightened the schraeder valve.  I still lose about 30 psi every ride.  My questions are:

1)  Is it worth trying to rebuild?
2)  Should I attempt the rebuild myself or send it to Noleen shock service (the exploded view of the shock from the manual looks daunting!)?
3)  Can I replace the Noleen with a newer Fox Float RL pull shock directly, or do I need a new seat stay as well?
4)  Where can I source a Fox shock and seat stay?

Thanks for your help,

Matt

if you can't get it warranteed then go to Noleenshockservice. If the bike (2001) is a new bike, call k2, they might rebuild it fer free for 'ya. They did for my Oz nr2 shock.

You could put a fox on there but your frame would require a new strut for the shock assembly from k2 i believe. The new razorbacks have the fox.

I had the same problem with my Noleen on my '01, although it lasted a good long time before it started to leak.  I took the shock off and sent it to the Noleen folks for a rebuild (somewhere around $100).  It never worked properly however when I got it back.  It always locked up during rides.  To Noleen's credit, they offered to make it right free of charge.  But I opted to get a Fox Float RL.  I had to go through a bike shop, as K2 said they would not deal with customers directly.  The Fox requires the special seat stays.  The whole deal was around $350, but the bad part was that it took a LONG time to get the parts.  I gotta blame the shop for that one.  Anyway, I really like the Fox shock.  It seems more plush and has a wider range of adjustability.  Good luck.

I could be mistaken (as always :-[), but I though I read somewhere here that k2 will now take orders and ship directly to customers ???
