Paul, the way to deal with this is to create a new post and sticky it.

That way, only you (or another mod) has the right to delete it, and it'll stay there as long as you want it to.  [smiley=nod.gif]

if anyone is reading this looking for MCUs and in Europe - then remember that Dave at CVI has MCU's.  just for the record, he also has a lot of spare parts for Proflex/K2 but doesn't sell bikes.  :-(

Does some one know where to get hold to new MCU`s in the Netherlands ?
Or are there conversionkits avalible for this old girl ?

A few weeks ago I was talking about our new spring kit for the ODS shock, well, it's finished and going out to testers tomorrow.  here is a sneak preview; I hope you like it, I've spent quite a long time perfecting the front and rear springs and making them work well.  We only have medium tension springs designed for 9 to 15 stone (57-95kg) riders.  Will be on sale when i bring up our new website after I get married!

The ODS and earleir GDT Units were soley designed to be used with MCUs.

Why? Well MCU disepate energy as well as store it. where as springs mearly store. The Shim stack in either of these dampers will a smashed to bits if you run a spring.

As Dave at CVI he will comfim what I has just said.

Good point but wrong,
the ODS damper was always over damped due to using 30wt fluid,when this unit was fitted with a spring
it performed much better,spring kits for ODS units
have been around for years,(the mountain spring,speed spring kit) springs to mind,many have used these with no Ill affects,also these kits come with a bottom out rubber stop,you really really would have to abuse these to smash a shim stack,your theory may be right but the reality is they work well,
and no I've no vested interest in the RDI kits apart from testing them (foc),my bike runs conventional air shocks.

Ps I have great respect for CVI and I always recommend them but they don't sell spring kits but they do sell MCU's at the same cost of a spring kit,work it out.

there are hundreds of "riding years" operating ODS with springs - I sold speedpro springs for 5 years and never once had a fault.  The COR springs are even better and actually fit the bike!

Also, I have included a foam bumper that stops the shock from bottoming out - so essentially, the shock now has two materials - fairly linear rate coil spring for the first 85% of travel and then a massively progressive last 15% to protect the shock.  I tested with different strengths of elastomer for the bottom out protection and in the end went with quite a hard compound.  I could have gone softer but I'd prefer to err on the side of caution.

As part of that work, I did actually come up with a new MCU product but decided not to sell it because MCU's are pretty crap and only have a 5 year lifespan out in the open before they lose their properties.  The MCU rebound protection in your car (if you have a sports car) is enclosed and lasts longer.  I had help from a mate of mine who is a rubber physicist and he designed the suspension for jaguar and many rally cars.

As part of the installation instructions, there is a guide to topping up and changing the oil inside the shock.  As Simon says, the shock is heavily over-dampened which was a fault during production because the spindle was supposed to be stainless steel and not aluminium - i.e. shiny and slidey - in the end there was too much friction against the MCU's.  this is why the 855heads had lots of ideas to drill out the MCU's and grease the spindle to get a better shock action.  

I ran my own 856 for 7 years with no bottom out protection to get an extra bit of travel - but I'd prefer customers to use the elastomer.
