Mega-air how good compared to ?
« on: April 12, 2004, 04:27:54 am »
Just looking to the future, soon I intent to build my son up an Oz frameset as a race bike and intend to swap many parts from his current bike over, over here in the UK we don't know or see much about the Noleen mega-air fork,we do have a service provider though, thing is how good are they, air or oil damped, adjustable compression/rebound,external or internal adjusters ???the brief spec I've read seems pretty good and it appears to be very light, also the bargin price makes it tempting, but he's currently running a Marzocchi MXC 02 model though not the lightest its been a good fork, would a swap to a mega-air be a backward or forward step, bear in mind weight is an issue as its for a race bike and he's only a lightweight 13 yearold,
any advice will be much appreciated,
thanks, Simon

it's light all right and for non epic/endurance racing it should be a good performer.

an x~link should be a winner, too for that matter

the mega~air is air/air, low maintenance, durability might be an issue as it has many pastic parts mated or screwed into aluminum.

it can be dialed in pretty plush if you adjust the air in the chambers. it has an external adjuster for rebound but it's not too effective. not all that great on washboard, but it's a good fork for not being state of the art.

i think he will like it and the price should be right for you. he's kicking your arse anyway out there so why not ??? [smiley=laughing.gif]

You've just made my boys day [smiley=laughing.gif],I've had to resort to pointing out to him that his race class only does 2/3rds the race distance of us oldies,I know in only a short space of time I won't see him for dust (mud etc) he's growing up so fast,as I've said in a PM though I wish to purchase 2 pairs of these forks ediscount won't post to the UK :(, US and Canada only, anyone any ideas ???

Easy to use, easy to adjust (see K2 website for owners manuals) however, difficult to warranty as Noleen does not build these anymore. But I have had my 01 MegaAir for 3 years and 2000 miles and have not had a leak!!!

Yeah I like mine a lot.  I have the 01 version with the grease ports.

Don't be fooled into thinking these are SID like noodles.  They are surprisingly tough.  It's held up better than a Manitou Black Super Air and has had some very tough use.

I blew air once in the dead of winter.  After it warmed up, it held air ok, so I guess it was just the cold.

I actually have three of these things, one has a pretty bad top out clunk that I can't get rid of but the other two are solid.

If you don't have any other options, I'd be willing to be the intermediary for shipping if you like.

Harv and others-I recently read a post at MTBR where there's a bunch of Mega fans.  He said it appears the top out spring could be replaced with an elastomer bumper used in Manitou forks-it stops the clunking found with the spring.  He has 6 of the forks so knows them inside out but hasn't tried this yet.
