Tire clearances
« on: December 17, 2003, 02:42:36 pm »
Just picked up a new pair of Geax Blades from ediscountbike.  The size is a 2.25.  I'm a little worried with the lack of clearance between the tread and the brake cable as it runs between the brake arms.  I've got approximately 1/4" in the front and a little less out back (I can probably adjust the brakes to gain a little more space).  I'm running Avid SD Ti's.
Couple of questions...
How much clearance is safe?
What tire sizes do you guys run?  If you run 2.25 or larger, are you still using linear pull brakes?
Could it be that Geax runs a little larger than other 2.25's?
Thanks,
Josh

The Blades are closer to a 2.35, very high volume.  I run one in the rear and a Weirwolf 2.4 in the front with no problems(the 'wolf was too wide for the back).  As far as V-brake clearance, I think you're probably pushing things but as long as you've got 1/2 cm or better you should be okay.

Geax Blade 2.25" come stock on the 2002 Bumpy Monkey.  You should be fine.

I have run 2.35 Kenda Kentics on the rear with a Rhynolite and a V-brake with a brake booster. It's tight on muddy days. I switched to a 2.1 in the winter.

My RS Psylo will fit up to 2.7" , according to the sales info. My Marzocchi Z1 up to a 3". I read RS Duke's fit up to a 2.4". I'd say it depends on the fork's brace.

i heard that..... [smiley=nod.gif]

i used my motoraptor for a tailgate liner...it does a good job of protecting the edge of my frame when the bike is hanging over the tailgate during shuttles...

such as this...

in fact that is the only good use for a Raptor... ;D
if i cry a tear everyday till A-line re-opens i'll have a lake in my house...8-(

Update-
I got the 2.35's I was waiting for (Kenda Kinetics).  They fit just fine with ample clearance.  The Blades are absolutely huge for a 2.25...who sized these things?
