Longer steerer for crosslink
« on: February 26, 2003, 05:49:30 am »
I need a longer steerer for my crosslink.  You don't want to know why... (grin)

Current one is standard uncut 235mm.  I need one at least 250mm.

Any ideas if there are longer steerers that can fit the crosslink?

thanks

A "large" model crosslink will have a longer steerer tube.  Call up K2 and see if they have any in stock and what length they are.  I think the part number is 15137.

For your "application"  ;) make sure you'll be able to maintain the critical dimension to the upper link (If I rember correctly it's 163mm for a standard length, '98 on up).  If you need a longer steerer because of the length of the head tube you're dealing with, you may need the entire large size fork.  Check the crosslink owners manual in the "How Tos" archive for the recommendations and an exploded view and parts list.

Thanks, Tom.  I know about the CM.  I'm experimenting though, and using a different ULM with the 99 Xlink.  It's strange, but my HT+HS runs higher than 163mm on a particular frame.  Letting the shock compress completely still leaves me a good 15-20mm gap to the tire, so I am not quite worried about bottoming out with an endo.

As for the steerer, I need a bit more to fit a tall stem.

I'll give K2 a call.  Too bad my LBS never actually make orders from k2, even when I place an order, they still just let it slide.  K2 won't take my order directly.

Anyone know how to make K2 think I am a LBS?  (grin)

Well, you could always go buy a business license, and open a mail order online shop to sell K2 equipment. :)

well, that's actually a way cool idea i wonder if k2 would work with us and the rider group members to have somekinda "online shop" or way for us ordering k2 parts.  i'd be willing to help or at least investigate on our behalf.

the least i can do is order the part thru my LBS

some of us are lucky to have a k2 dealer nearby or a cooperative LBS, some aren't those are the ones that need help.

If my LBS would actually order it, I would be thrilled. They put me off.  Not sure why, since they can get items from other suppliers fine.

Ya my LBS keeps telling me to go to REI and REI keeps telling me to go to a LBS then the LBS wants to sell me a new bike. How do you get by with only 3-4 bikes at home?

LOL.  My wife wonders why too...  (I keep telling her I will get rid of one of them)

On a serious note, I am looking into getting the zoom threadless 1.125" steerer extender.  This should do it.

DiRT, i can order the k2 part thru my LBS if you want and send it to you. don't know if the steerer thingy you are looking at will do the job.

my LBS should be able to get it in a week, or so, if it's in stock at k2

:o I just keep the old ones around so the flakey, lazy (cheap) friends have something to ride especially when they say things like I wish I could go MTB'ing with you but I dont haver a bike. That's when you say oh I have a extra one for you to ride then you take um out and ride till they are so sore they can barely walk to the bar for drinks after the ride! CA, I may take you up on this.  I'm still trying out the frame to really see if it is worth it.  I may just pony-up the cash for a whole new fork.

thanks
