6½" Rear travel on my 5500c
« on: September 07, 2003, 09:12:07 am »
Hi Guys

I haven't posted for ages - busy summer with hols etc.  Majorca for two weeks, it was 43oC in the shade in the day, and 30oC ay dawn!  Last 5 nights I slept out under the stars in just my underpants /  Y fronts / boxers - call them what you will.  Saw some folks on decent hired MTB's, but sweat hell!

Ages ago (this year), I got one of those Fox Vanilla RC's from Supergo, fitted a Ti spring to it, and the stroke of 2.75" gives me 6½" travel, and yes I do use all the travel when I'm winging it over the rough stuff - it gives the Oz a very confident feel and I don't notice any bob going uphill.  Anything with longer travel would cause the swingarm to hit the frame (experiments I've done with bike upside down and without spring).  I do have pics, must upload them soon.

I'd like to try an Astro 5 on my other frame.

Nige how is the Fox Float?

The i2i is 8½" (216mm), with a stroke of 2½".

My LBS has a new unused Vanila RC with 2" stroke, which would give 5.25" travel, not sure about the i2i on this unit (could be 204mm).

The SUB fork raised the front end compared to the XLink.  The overall difference was that the BB height off the ground (no rider) increased by 5/8".

Ride wise, the bike exudes confidence.

Hi Oz-sub so you've fitted a shock thats effectivly 7mm longer but with 25mm of extra stroke and the USE sub fork has raised the front effectivly cancelling out the the change in the rake angle from fitting the longer shock, would I be right in thinking that this was your intension thus effectivly the handling has stayed the same, my one concern is you have raised the bike by 5/8 of an inch, does this extra height make the bike feel a bit unwieldy or can you feel no differance, just curious thats all Simon [smiley=nod.gif]

Hi Richard!

Great to se you posting, must get down to yours again for a whole day, bit fitter lately!

....about the Fox - it's a long story, bad luck/delays/too many balls in the air type stuff!, but I will be trying it in the week, so will let you know how it goes...

SID rear is still the business in my view (now on the Large EVO), Simon tried it out the other day (continuing my travels throughout the UK to ride with other Proflexers!),  shorter eye to eye makes the bike more low slung,  just fiddling with a tight XC setup at the mo,( I'll probably go to longer travel eventually!!!! )-  some reports have said the evo feels a little too tall when riding.

Nige.

Never heard of the SUB fork --  What are its specs as far as travel and controls? It wouldnt happen to be this crazy one from U.S.E would it? As most of you know Im in search of a front fork since my brainy shock in the xlink is on its way out and im thinking Fox or Zocchi.

Looks like everyone loves the Vanilla RC for the rear, Im just still confused as to wether Im really going to have to cut/file the swinarmg shock mount (thats a one-shot deal!) and how to cut down the spacers to make the shock work properly (anyone got extras?). Right now I pretty much understand where diff i2i's and strokes will lead as far as travel and feel and I think i want at least 8.25 or more ... unless if adding a 4"+ travel fork up front will raise the BB back up to stock or higher if I use an 8" i2i rear ...  ???

Do most people around the 170lb range use a 500# spring on the fox?

K2ozm99 yes that is the USE fork, 100mm travel Air eugland damper won't dive when braking but remains active to bumps, you may need to remortgage if you want to buy one.Simon
