need to replace crankset/BB in disco monkey
« on: September 29, 2003, 07:05:31 pm »
I finally tryed the 24" rear wheel, and love it!! but now the 'problem' or better said: to make my bike 'the perfect bike" I need to change the crank arms lenght, from 175mm to may be 170mm or 165mm. for better clearance, but I have a square pin BB, so I would change it too, my bike is an 8 speed (which I like so will keep) any sugestions whith brands and models? of course price is important. but performance is the key!

No need to replace the BB if it ain't broke (or really old). However, a new BB isn't all that expensive either. That said, I replaced the cranks on my wife's bike last year with a Shimano Hollowtech crankset for the square taper BB. (She already had a very nice, practically brand new square taper Race Face BB). I can't remember the exact model number. Cost me $12 brand new (eBay), and basically looks a heck of a lot like my LX crankset, weighs just a hair more, and shifts exactly the same. I doubt you'll find a deal quite that good, but you can certainly find a similar crankset for about $40.

BTW, 8 & 9 speed cranks are fully interchangeable. The only possible difference (with some brands) is that the teeth are just slightly thicker on the 8 speed models. You will never notice the difference in real life. Spacing is the same, so it doesn't matter what front derailleur you have (although a 9-speed FD with an 8 speed chain won't work too well).

what kind of riding are you doing ? I have a Hussevelt crankset with a truvativ gigapipe bb and have been v happy with it. I am toying with the idea of changing to a 2 ring set up, truvativ make a 28 -38t set up and it can be used with an Evil bashguard / guide --looks so cool especially with the 24" rear , and I think the gearing ratios will be fun. How is your bike set up , what front and rear shock and what size tyres, stem etc?

Curious.  What exactly do you love about the 24 inch wheel?

well....for starters, the 24' gives faster acceleracion; so I can get out of a switchback and charge to a jump with no problem, it's easier to manual;  is more agile, so  i'm (almost) always ready for unexpected drops or to pop a wheeley over obstacles, its way stronger; so you are not always worried about reshaping your rim,and gives you more room for more travel, which translates in wilder play!!! but don't get me wrong, I also have my 26" rear for longer (more coaster oriented) rides, because 26" ARE faster, but I like to ride alone,so yeah may be I'm freerideyki, only if is about having fun no competition (but improvement) and don't care if I'm the fastes in the mountain, just if I'm the one with the fattest smiles :) :P ::)
