5500 Carbon Bike insurance??
« on: June 12, 2012, 04:39:30 pm »
Hi all I'm currently moving house at the moment. I have never insured my proflex 5500 as its always been stored in my bedroom ( no I don't sleep with it).

My question is, has anyone insured thier carbon bike ? I don't know how to go about it with insurers as I completely rebuilt the bike and it's still worth a few grand in components alone, I don't have the receipts for all components or the bike as it was an eBay purchase long ago.

Originally when new I believe the bike was worth 4k but I don't seriously know how to approach insurers about this?

Any ideas?

You can go on ebay and search for completed listing and see what complete bikes have sold for. Look in the UK and USA. Not to many but at least you can print that out for reference. Or at least do the same thing for the frame and bits that on it and show the cost for it all.

You can insure anything for any amount of money. The insurance plans you're familiar with, which automatically include depreciation, are just the most common kind of policy, not the only kind of policy.

just ask your current provider.Presuably you have some kind of house and or contents insurance. In our country bicycles are ussually insured as part of a household contents rather than a "vehicle"You can suggest a value you may be able to nominate any value(and pay accordingly)

Most US home insurance policies only cover bicycles and other similar equipment up to a fixed value, usually $1000 apiece or some multiple of that for an entire collection, regardless of sale price or residual value. It's annoying.

My parents homeowner's insurance covered my bike when it got stolen during my college days; ask your provider.
