Just buy a coilover shock from Noleen J6. They work SO MUCH BETTER than the rubber springs ever did.

NR-1, NR-2, NR-4 are your options. Any of the ones with a cone-shaped mount at one end. I have two NR-4s and an NR-2; the NR-4 is definitely the nicest, because it has preload/compression/rebound adjustments. You'll be amazed how much faster your bike will feel once you get the damping dialed-in and the pedal bob goes away.

I realize that cost is a limiting factor, i.e. he might be able to afford new elastomers but not a coil shock -- but I'm curious, has anyone ever switched to coils or air and then switched back to elastomers because they liked them better? (when I say "liked", I mean "liked the ride better", not "liked the retro look".)

Also I wonder how do the new elasomers available compare to the ride given by the original elasomers. The RDS ones were known to be a bit firmer. This was maybe because they were made from a different material. The originals being a sort of aerated elasomer and more supple(and self distructive).
