K2 5000 Frame weight?
« on: June 21, 2010, 05:37:02 pm »
Ok so Today I just rode for the first time my Fiancees Proflex Beast..
I have ALWAYS been a weight weenie I have a 1993 Gt Zaskar Le that weighs in a little over 18lbs with Pedals.

Anyway I am now getting older and I am not really digging the hardtail beatdown I get from my old trusty Zaskar.

I REALLY loved the feel of that beast and am looking to finally change my ride and I am really liking the reviews the k2 5000 gets from everyone..

So I am thinking about transfering most of my componets over to a new frame like the 5000 but I cannot find any solid info on how much the frame/swingarm/shock weigh???

any help would be MAJOR appreciated

Thanks.

Welcome Fierce750,

From what I remember, the 5000 weight is approximately 7.5 lbs. Not too bad considering the coil/oil shock.

The feel of coil shocks (compared to air shocks) is well worth the increase in weight. Buy titanium springs if you want to save a little weight.

If you transfered all the parts from the Zaskar to a 5000, you would have a 21.5 lb. rocket ship. Lose maybe a lb., by putting on a platform airshock like a Fox DHX air, and you have the the climbing king too at 20.5 lbs.  :o :o :o

My best bike is my 957, 4 inches travel front and rear, at 22 lbs. Both ends air sprung, rear is oil damped, front is air damped. ;D ;D ;D

Weenies unite!!!!!

P.S. I can't do hardtails anymore. ;)

Thanks for the help guys..

It's gonna be a huge change, it was hard to hit the buy now button since it is 7.5 lbs but I went ahead and did it :)

Should be a fun switch!

Here is the link to the bike if you wanted to see it..  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160445298282&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Again thanks for the help guys and I will be back A LOT now since I am sure I will have some questions about the rear suspension now..

Ohhhh!!

That is in really clean shape. I have had a smartshock on my crosslinks, and worked just as well in default when the battery died. I would invest in a lizard skin shock boot too.

I wonder if the swingarm has been removed or regreased. You should definately check to see if the X-ring seals are in place. If not, simple O-rings will do. If they are still there, I recommend OP's quick regrease technique, which has worked brilliantly for me for 10 years now.
