Health Warning-read this
« on: October 27, 2009, 02:54:34 am »
Felt i should post this since i was unaware of the symtoms until this happend.
Just prior to going on holiday on the 16th oct i had some flashes in my right eye thinking no more of it until half way thorugh the holiday when i developed a small shadow in the lower part of my eye,i still had fine vision with my contacts or glasses on and thought i would get it checked on my return.
As it turns out the flashes were when my retinal tear happend which then developed into the detatchment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retinal_detachment read this
I was rushed to a eye spesialist at coventry hospital and the next day, sunday ,was booked into moorfields eye hospital in london to be operated on.I am now off work for probably 4 weeks with no vision in my right eye, it should recover, with about a 80-85% sucsess rate. Any strenuous excersise/swimming/lifting is out of the question during this period as well.
What i wany to bring to the attention to everyone is this,
If you are middle aged, suffer with short sight, have a blow to the eye or head and suffer any flashes or dark floaters or spots in the eye then go to the doctors immidiatley! If i had caught this when i had the flashes then it could have been corrected, possibly, with a laser but if it is left then an opperation will be needed or it could lead to sight loss. Please make the symptoms aware to more people, one in 10,000 can be affected but this figure may be higher.
I was not aware of these symtoms, are you?

Superhondaman, I am very sorry to hear this has happened. It sounds like you were able to get good care though once the ball got rolling. Keep your head up and stay positive. Hopefully the four weeks will just fly by. Best of luck

yes - aware of this as it happened to my Dad. I have a few floaters in my right eye and had them checked but they are natural and of no concern in my case thankfully.

You've got me kind of worried.
What is the flashing like?
I've had occasional flickering (like when you see a TV screen on an oldish movie) under effort fo a couple of years now, I used to associate it with blood sugar or hydration problems.
I have 24/20 vision and would be in a terrible state if  I lost any of it.

Luke, I am hypo glycaemic , which basically means i sometimes suffer from low blood sugar , my vision starts to go tunnel like, and looses definition. I have never had any flashing lights and flickering tho, but worth knowing about.
OP did you bang your head at all?? I took a big hit off a windsurf boom and got  a right shiner, saw stars that day , but noo  grey area.
