Even the number rings a bell, it's a meta "55"

Seems the good designs stick around, and we've finally got over the "make it different and then invent a marketing ploy" fad.
Warranty replacements due to cracks detected in time (since 1989):

Very nice.  Looking on line I noticed that this place is about a 30 minute drive from me.  http://www.go-ride.com/CategoryProductList.jsp?cat=BY+MANUFACTURER:COMMENCAL&gclid=CNPB1Y6svJ8CFQ4HagodSnHdEw
Might have to go take a few test rides

I had a demo one for a weekend. Nice bike, particularly when things point down. Pedals nice enough as well.
