Creaking and popping carbon bike
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:20:07 am »
Not sure if this is the reason why  :o  but my carbon frame is creaking and popping really badly.  Think it could be an ISIS BB on its way out or could be the frame coming apart!

The singlespeed UK championships were fabulous fun, riding the old proflex was fun (but noisy) - you'll see I've got an old BMW proflex top on for the full effect.  No other riders were daft enough to ride proflexes or K2's this year!

Its True! An Oz can Fly!

Creaking and popping eh? You sure it isn't those old knees? <GRIN>

Seriously though, I've experienced this sympton a few times on my bikes, the plastic seems to amplify any noises.

Yes, the BB could be at fault, when they're on their way out they sure let you know by making the frame creak really well!

A "Popping" noise could be siezed rear shock bushes, worth a check? (top and bottom!)

I had creaking a popping on my Oz, only to find by accident that the drive side swingarm pivot face had debonded from the carbon. I unscrewed it, cleaned and reapplied epoxy before threading it back on. No more noise.

On another occasion, the XT hollowtech chainring bolts kept coming loose. I loctited them and noise gone. On another occasion, the replaceable dropout screws came loose and one of them fell out. Again loctite and noise was gone. Amazingly it shifted good.

Good luck on that,

My creaking and popping resurfaced Tuesday again. Every right pedal stroke, a popping. Every left pedal stroke a creaking. Nothing coasting, so I thought to look at the swingarm pivot. It is the sealed bearing type and the washer between the bearings and pivot face insert was sliding. Some penetrating oil quieted it down. I may have to reduce the lenght of the shaft to take up some slack.

Does your frame have the sealed bearing conversion?
