Newb Shock question

I took apart my noleen nr-2 rear shock today.  I compressed the shock(without the spring)  and it rebounds slowly, but smoothly.  I have another NR-2 which is missing the rebound adjustment nut (the thing just screws off?).  and i compressed this one, and it rebounded very quickly  (kind of like a spring).  It also takes some force to compress it.

which shock is behaving properly?  

If the second shock is behaving properly then i'll take the nut off of the first nr-2 and use it with the second shock.


Also anyone know how to properly remove the nut?  It's the conical nut that spins to adjust rebound.  I know it is threaded into the shock rod.

The one that is hard to compress and rebounds quickly is the one that is working correctly.  

Which nr-2 do you have, if memory serves they made both oil and nitrogen versions.

If it is nitrogen charged the one that is not rebounding quickly probably needs to be re-charged, I think at about 200psi, you cant do this yourself - a motorcycle shop can.  

If it is the oil version it sounds like the shock has leaked, so no oil, so no pressure, so that equals slow rebound.  If it does have a leak I think you may be better off getting a new shock, Risse's are quite good.



Someone correct me if I am wrong!

As for the adjustment nut part of your question I am afraid I am not going to be much help.

 ???the shock without the rebound nut could be a nr-1, not a nr-2. nr-1's look just like a nr-2 but has no rebound adjustment. does the shock that has rebound, have a knurled nut on the shaft or is it a red dial on the shock body?

to more go with bikendan's post....the nr-2 has an adjustment knob, when working properly the shock shaft will rebound varying from VERY slowl to pretty quick, depending on the adjsutment postion...if it does that, then it's normal.

never seen an nr1 before but that seems to be good to go" by your description

the nr2 has a knurled nut on the shaft for gripping to turn the rebound control.  I guess the threaded shaft with without the nut could be a nr1 as it came with my 857.  And also yes when i adjust the rebound it varies the rebound quickness.  But it still does not rebound as quickly as the 857 on the fast rebound setting.  Anyone know how much a typcail nitrogen recharge goes for?

Seren,  I differ with you regarding the shock's correct behavior.
I beleive, that without the coil, the shaft should rebound slowly.  This "slowness" of the shaft, is what will prevent the shock equipped bike from bucking. It will moderate the shock's rebound so the rider will not feel the bike is trying to throw him/her over the handlebars.
