Installed 856 COR upgrade - my observations
« on: August 30, 2008, 09:53:27 pm »
Hello all,

First, thanks to Callum for making a great product...my COR upgrade arrived from the UK faster than most US eBay purchased I've made.

I installed the springs on my large 856 this evening and the upgrade was really smooth...but not without hitches, which I thought I'd share:

- the rear spring is firmer than I expected. At 160 lbs, with no preload, the spring is on the firmer side of what I'[d consider riding. I wish I could make it a little more supple.

- The front spring is spot on for what I was hoping for, but only after a little quick thinking. My stock front shock had a M10 nut on the bottom, which retained the original elastomers and bottom cup...the shock rod would continue through that nut and screw into the bottom eyelet. Well, in order to get the spring to work I had to omit that nut. No issues without it that I can tell, though, and the shock feel is where it should be.

Can't wait to go for a ride! Thanks again, Callum!

- Doug :-)

When I tested these conversions for Callum the only thing I did was to cut the plastic pre-load adjuster
down still leaving plenty of length so you can still get your hand on it to adjust.
This way I was still able to fit the shaft lock nut.
I also had to do this on the old speed spring conversion that used to be available.

The COR conversion is an excellent upgrade.

Sounds like you need to spec a softer rear spring, maybe if you haven't used it you could ask to exchange
for a softer one.

I have ordered COR springs aswell but thought there is only one spring rate? Should I have given my body weight when ordering?

Yes, I think there is just one spring weight of COR springs.
I'd guess you're at the lighter end of the expected range..........I weigh in at 200lb plus kit.........

I used to have Speedspring conversions (MS-Pro 4 and 7) on my XP-X until I replaced them with Titanium springs (350lb/in Rear, 200lb/in front), I didn't have to cut down the plastic pre-load rings.

Maybe you need something about 300lb/in?

The M10 nut acts as a lock nut, I have known cases of the ODS shaft becoming detached from the bottom pivot due to it's unthreading itself if this isn't tightened up.

If you checkout the PDF instuctions on the RDS site for fitting the COR system you will see on page 3 the pre production COR kit fitted to the bike I tested.
You can see the front adjuster is shorter this was enable the spring to be setup with little or no preload.
Without this I found you had a starting point with more pre load than I desired.

This looks useful for you Doug:

Speedpro Coil Spring Conversion Kit for '95-'96 ProFlex / Girvin ODS Systems. Front Spring (fork)  MS-1, soft, 120-160 lbs unmounted / NIB. All parts and instructions. Surely someone out there needs this spring!

Hello all,

Yes, I noticed the interference with the black adjuster knob when I was installing...I'll chec it in the lathe and take off some of the height when I rebuild the ODS's. In the meantime I'll just do without the locknut on the front.

I also saw that speed Spring...but that looks to be fr the front, and the rear spring I got from Callum is the one that seems a little too stiff. I'm going to ride it for a bit to see how it feels...it actually might be right. But I may also ask Callum if he has weaker ones sitting around. In general the kit is really high quality, and well worth the money!
