Will carbon legs fit Vectors?
« on: August 23, 2008, 02:54:53 am »
I may be having some carbon legs coming my way soon and was wondering if they can be retro-fitted to Vectors?

this is a good question.  I think the carbon legs were interchangeable with the crosslinks but not sure...

yes they're off crosslinks (I assume?), so I guess the question is: are crosslinks legs interchangeable with Vectors?

My Vector legs are about  20 mm shorter than my crosslink between at the two link holes. But that is not to say that it won't work in some fashion. A longer shock maybe? Perhaps invert the lower link. Yes, that's the ticket.

certainly, when I was evaluating the early crosslinks, I noticed that the eccentric "J" path was a lot less pronounced in the crosslinks forl, so the action will be different.  A Vector 2 with carbon legs is very interesting...

Vector 2's were available with carbon legs.
I ordered some when I got my 856 frameset but they were delayed because of a quality issue
so I settled for the standard legs as I was impatient  ;D

I've measured my Vector II's and my Carbon Crosslinks.

The distance between the Upper & Lower Pivot rod/Axle points is:

Vector II  130mm
Crosslink   155mm

which would make an interesting Chimera!!
(I think it would push the Upper Link Assembly further up until it was about horizontal {rather than sloping down} and if the suspension moved then the upper pivot point would move back as it went up and the lower point would go forwards as it went up resulting in a "J-Path" that kicked the bottom of the fork forward?)

But, I am sure that there was a carbon legged Vector available.

from the Vector 2_assy.PDF, http://idriders.com/proflex/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=34&pos=0

the following parts are listed:
ITEM# PART# KIT# QTY. DESCRIPTION
29 14975-1 1 Leg, Right Standard Carbon
30 14984-1 1 Leg, Left Standard Carbon

and lo and behold, here's a picture of an 854 with Carbon Vectors!

Having has a set of Vectors apart I know that the aluminum legs are surprisingly light...how much lighter can the carbon legs really be? Or is carbon bling the prize you seek ;-) hehe

Carbon Crosslink legs are only slightly lighter than Aly one's

1328g for Aly
1255g for Carbon

(Both complete forks with NR-5's)

But If you believe what they said about the 5500 frame being 10% lighter and 50% stronger then that adds up and might be the benefit....................and the Bling Factor undoubtably!!! <GRIN>
