Karma..lets make some rules..aka why smite the kiwi?

when you look at a post by the authors name there is a Karma score and an applause and a smite ....if you applaud someone their Karma goes up by one.If you smite someone their karma goes down by one....what do we do to deserve smiting..or applause?
I note i have been smitten a great blow  ....and applauded... so my karma is 0
