We had a similar incident here.  The guy who did it is a loner mountain biker.  There's this  land that's privately owned by a developer that mountain bikers have been poaching on for years.  For some reason this guy who did some trail work thinks it his trail.  We seen on the trails and invited him to ride with us.  He refused.  Anyway over night the trail was full of holes making it dangerous for the unwary.  Our local enforcer/mma fighter sat on the top of the mountain and spotted this guy making more holes.  He went after the guy with the intent of breaking some bones.  At the same time some mountain bikers showed up.  Our enforcer guy changed his target from the loner guy to the guy's bike totalling destroying it.  The enforcer guy (who's been in trouble with the law) explained to us later that he couldn't  have any witnesses (even friends) seeing him hit the guy.  So the loner guy luck out when the mountain bikers showed unexpectedly.
