k2 4000 rear shock

Hello all!

I was wondering if anyone can suggest a good replacment rear shock for my k2 4000. Something that would fit without too much trouble and work well. Money is not a problem.

Risse Astro 5 is a direct fit. It is an air sprung shock and very light.

I think Jeffhop had one for sale a short time ago. You could contact him to see if he still has it.

Ok, here is the deal fitting the swinger to your 4000. The upper frame plates are more narrow than a carbon frame of the same design. What that means is an air swinger 8.25" i2i would have to be mounted resevoir down. Matno has done it this way. Works for him.

Now you could find a shorter swinger, and put a cross block at the top, to extend the resevior end back to 8.25" and clear the upper plates.

My problem is I have a 4000, so I'm going to have to make some frame modifications.

I'm going to try to modify the lower mount like rhinoDave did.  



Finding an 8.25" swinger is difficult, they quit making them in 2004.  Perhaps more bike stores will be dumping their stock on eBay like the one did recently.

That Air Swinger looks good, did you have to make any mods to the top end of it or the frame on the Oz?

I've got a 8.75" 5th Element that I plan to put on my Oz. I definately want to put it on the "right" way round, i.e. piston facing down so that muck doesn't get so easily transferred into the shock, particularly if I cover it with a "boot".

The back of the shock body did touch the seam(glue joint)of the frame, do I did file the back a tad for some clearance. But otherwise slips in nicely.

I've never had a problem with muck getting into my Swinger that's mounted "upside down." And I ride in a lot of mud. The seals are pretty tight. The main drawback is that I think it would look cooler the other way (plus the lettering is upside down!) It was pretty easy to mount by modifying the swingarm mounts just a tad. It works beautifully. I've started taking it on bigger and bigger drops lately - with no problems (at least not with the shock - the frame and/or fork is starting to rattle a bit...)
