SlowerThanDirt- Suggestions
« on: December 31, 2006, 04:54:04 pm »
original post by "Slower Than Dirt"
60 year old and needing to loose weight.  Saw an add on Craigslist here in Jacksonville.  Saw the 856 and purchased it.

This unit has had the poly shoks replaced sith springs.
I also found a cracked seat post.

Boy, it sure seems a problem to rais the bar.  I don't bend like I used to and need about 4 - 6 inches to be comfortable. I surely need to raise the bar far enough to need the hydraulic lines replaced.  One shop says they get $100 per brake and found out the fittings are no logner available.  Another shop (the one that originally sold the bike) said they could do it for about $100.

I am quite good with mechanics once I know how to something.  I used to race model ariplanes including building the plane, modifying the engine etc.

I'm considering totally rebuilding the bike myself.

Any suggestions

Slower than Dirt, Congrats on getting your 856.

As far as raising your bars, BikeNashbar has steerer extensions.

I believe that if you have hydraulic lines, they are magura style HS22. I have had longer hoses installed and bled for less than  $20 bucks each. It is really not any different than disk brakes. You may have to supply the mineral oil. Search out a shop that already has the Magura tools.

Have fun, Terry

Sorry to digress slightly but I'm very interested in this steerer extension thing - I always have problems with my bikes because I have proportionately very long legs so my seatpost is always way up high (I have to have a 400mm at full extension), which then leaves my handlebars way down below and I get back ache - I usually buy a hi-rise stem and hi-rise handlebars to compensate - but can you get steerer extensions for Ahead and will it solve my problem? Presumably you need a whole bunch of spacers too?

i would be very wary of running stem extensions on an off road bike.i think you would be better off with a higher rise stem or a bigger frame, but thats just my opinion.
