ODS construction? (fitting to Vector 1)
« on: February 01, 2007, 09:43:29 am »
My shocks arrived from Germany today...  Just ODS, but with Eibach springs, & the main point being the upgrade from the rubber-on-a-stick front 'shock' that I had before.

Back was on in 2 minutes, & feels awesome!  But the front... well it could have just gone well, couldn't it?  :(

Apparently, Vector-1s have a larger mounting hole at the top of the shock than Vector-2s.  Which is a tad annoying.  So my question is this - how's the metal (gold) part of an ODS made?  If it's solid, the hole on the new shock's gonna get bigger, sharpish...

I can't wait to get these fitted, so please help me!  The back feels like a new bike, & that was with a proper shock & relatively close to spec, brand new, elastomers...  The front'll be amazing if I ever get there!

Cheers :)

ZIGGY

from when i serviced mine , the internal "hole" stops before the hole for the mounting bolt

so enlarging it shouldn`t be a problem , as far as i can see

anyone ????

Cheers - & thanks again for finding em for me!  :)

If it turns out that I can't enlarge the hole, I expect I'll be able to get round it another way - this just seems easiest.
It makes sense that it'd be solid - the rear one's very similar but with a bigger hole, so I imagine they just cut the hole to suit the mounting location...

Think I'll give it a service before I fit it & then I can see for myself - seem to remember there are instructions on here somewhere?

edit: found the instructions...

Well I wasn't that keen on modifying the shock - I (/whoever I took it to if I wasn't feeling brave!) might have made a mess of it, I might want to sell it on in the future etc etc...  So my mind turned to other options!

I'll put some pics up if anyone's interested, but basically, I now have 2 stub axles (links->stem mount on each side), with a smaller one running through them & through the standard shock mounting hole.  A bit of threaded rod & a couple of nylocs through the lot holds it together, but not too tight!

Amazingly, I managed to get the bits off the shelf, only requiring chopping to length & minor fettling to fit.  The stub axles are slightly too small in their O/D, so ideally I'll get a new standard top axle & cut that up (would need to enlarge the I/D slightly though).  Anyone know where I can get one?  Don't really want to use the old one, as I'd like to be able to put it all back to stock if I need to!

Wow - that's a really dull post & probably impossible to understand, but maybe it'll be of use to someone sometime!  :)  I've got loads of the tube / rod left over, so if anyone needs a magic kit made up...!

I'm a pictures kind of person (can't follow written instruction to save my life - need images!!) - if you have any pix that would be interesting, but don't do them specially for me... it's only out of idle interest (not practical benfit...yet!)

Will do!  Thanks again for finding em for me!  Oh, & I got the tyres ok too :)

I'll hopefully get a quick ride in tonight, so I'll report back then...  Might even get round to doing a writeup on my home-made lights too.

Ziggy, can't quite understand your description, I'm with Orange on that one!
Looking at my Vector II fork and ODS, All I can see that fits it to the Upper Link Mount is an M6 Bolt, a "Top Pivot Tube" that is slightly wider than the ODS and fits in the gap between the ULM holes and a pair of "Seal Spacers" that pack the gap and centralise the whole thing.

I would have thought all you'd need would be a similar pivot tube, i.e. to take the ODS hole size down to M6 and a couple of spacing washers, preferrably nylon or rubber to go either side?

Or are you fitting it to a fixed stem mount instead of an ULM?

(This ramble is probably just as confusing...........)

See K2Bike Tech
http://www.k2bike.com/tech_library/pdfs/vector2_assy.pdf

Parts 21 and 24 and the two seals each side of 24.

Shame we havn't got a diagram of a Vector I (Have we, have we?)
