Rear shock for small 856?
« on: May 22, 2006, 02:30:41 pm »
Does anyone know if there are any shocks other than a Noleen which will fit a 14" 856 frame?

I am going  thru this also on a small 957.

I have not found one yet. But I think a GTD or ODS should fit. The only Noleens that look to be a NR1 or NR2 with the tapered end.

Let me know what you come up with. Where are you located?

What is a GTD?  I have used a Noleen NR2 which is blown, and I am back to the original ODS with a coil spring.  The seals are gone on the ODS and it is loosing oil rapidly.  I have an email out to K2 to see if they still have any service parts or old stock, and another to Stratos to see if their Helix might fit. I tried a Risse Genesis, but it wont fit the frame.  Any way I'm in New Mexico

Opps, GDS (Grivin Damping System). I had one of them a while back as a spare for my 97 beast. Gave it to the new owner. Now I wish I had it back.

Well if you find out another brand, I would like to know.

Does your shock actually bolt inside of the top tube like mine?

Yes my shock bolts inside the top tube  [smiley=coolfrown.gif].

I heard back from Sratos - they no longer make anything that we can use.  I'm still talking with Noleen - www.noleenshockservice.com - to see if they can build a Risse air shock to fit.  Otherwise I'll have them build me a new NR2.  They go for about $300.

I heard back from Noleen shock service.  They say there is a Risse Genesis shock to fit small frames.  They are going to ship one to me.  I will let you know how it goes.

be really wary on those 14" frames - especially the x57 bikes.  We did some testing years ago and there is a little lateral pressure on the shock as it compresses - We think a lot of the nr-2's broke on those frames for that reason.

Callum, I think you are right on. I have been doing some work on my small 957, and the shock had been hitting the seat mast, right below the little weld stop. I took out that excess material. The shock had been long trashed but was not broken. I reckon that the pressure led to the seal failing.

I finally recieved my new Risse Genesis.  It fits!  I haven't had time to ride much, but first impression is great!  Let me know if I should post pics.

Well, I am kind of in shock.  :D :D :D

What a revelation to find the Risse Genesis tucks so nicely into the top tube of a small frame. The noleen shock for a small frame had been specially made to tuck into the frame. The genesis bushing eyelet is offset to one side which solves that problem.

Good show!

Very nice Steve!

Wish I could get a small frame for my youngest. That kind of a ride would help her enjoy riding so much more than her 50# WalMart bike!
Hate to do it, but I think she's going to get a Hardrock for her birthday.

Cheers

Just out of interest chaps, how tall would you need to be before you could ride a small frame, my little boy is allready asking how old he needs to get his own.
For heaven sake if Shovelon knows keep him quiet as Mrs Tel has just stung me for an 857. (thanks for giving her the idea Terry!)
Cheers, Tel.

Your very welcome Tel. ;)

Let Mrs. Tel know that Mrs. Shovelon did a 20 miler 2 weeks ago on her 957. She loved the bke, but hated the seat(ouch). [smiley=disbelief.gif] So we gotta work on that. Oh baby, nothin like a honey on a Proflex! :-*
