unknown proflex
« on: March 27, 2006, 10:56:53 pm »
just found forum, ,,great i thought i had the last remaining proflex on the planet !!!!

i bought my bike about 6 years ago from a guy who was into xc racing (not pro ) he said it was a 856.

now i have seen bikes on this forum i think i have some kind of inbreed proflex monster...

the bike came with carbon swing arm which mounted on main down tube. ( it now has a ally swing arm as i bust the carbon one !!).

the front girvins have a ods shock with yellow pieces of concrete attached. the rear has no ods but still has the yellow concrete pieces.

i want to upgrade the shocks so they actually move up and down but i dont know what i can do to them ???

anyone help pleaseeeeee

chris

With regards to the front forks you can upgrade to a noleen shock if you can find one, in my opinion i wouldnt throw alot of money at them if upgrading as parts are getting very hard to get, so maybe better off with a cheap marzocchi which would probably do a better job.

With regards to the rear same again can fit a noleen or risse shock, not that easily available if in the UK the only company doing the stuff and servicing was CVI who have recently closed, maybe more joy if in the states.

Try ebay often get girvin forks listed

How about uploading apic of your bike,
sounds like it could be a 956  ??? maybe with an 855
shock ???,
the ally s/arm you fitted what model is it from,
low end 97 model  ???
your pretty much stuck for rear shock only Risse
offer direct replacements,
to fit other makes requires some ingenuity you need to checkout some off the galleries to see what can be achieved,

With regards to forks you will either be 1 1/8 steerer or possibly an 1".

If its an inch you will be limited to forks, would need a fork with a bolt in steerer (most are bonded nowadays) and prehaps a shim so you can fit a 1 inch steerer into a 1 1/8 crown (if that makes sense)

You can get new magura forks pretty cheap, check ebay or mountain biking uk and they have a bolt in fork, bought some for my proflex 97 beast, havnt ridden it yet but smooth and fairly light forks.

Should be fine even with a 1" steerer
the 9 style frames (which yours sounds like it is)come with a 1 1/8" headset but the steerer is 1"
the 1" steerer has a spacer fitted to go with
the 1 1/8" headset.
you just leave out the spacer when fitting a fork with
a 1 1/8" steerer tube.

i have just uploaded some pics to gallery, under northern monkey file.

if anyone can tell me what ive got it would be appreciated.

ignore the rock shox on front end , i fancied trying some shox that actually moved,  ,,,    i have original girvin forks still  they have the ods shoc with yellow blobs.

what i really want to do is keep girvin fronts and replace shock unit with one that works and is adjustable.

on the back i just want to replace with new after market unit.

i am on limited budget owing to wife ,two kids, and ginea pigs,, oh and mortgage.

thanx

Thats an 857 style frame circa 97
with an 855 strut and shock circa 95
the s/arm is a lower end 97 model,
thats my best shot.

with a limited budget your pretty stuck for rear shock
options,Risse isn't cheap, keep an eye out on ebay
for a Noleen coil over shock with strut for a 857/957
other than that its make a custom adaptor to fit another make of shock,
IMHO I wouldn't bother trying to upgrade the shock on the forks,
better off keeping an eye out for some Girvin/Noleen
crosslink forks these crop up quite regular if you wish
to say with a linkage fork,

you have got a 857  and looks like you have a 757 or similar swingarm, and somehow a 756  strut and "shock".It isnt a 856 shock cos they had the ods unit, looks exactly like the shock on my 756.It could be a shock of the 855 but it is definetly a x56 strut, isnt it trevor?
I think you should cut about an inch of your seatpost, when the shock compresses it must be *&^% close to the seatpost

hi kiwi,
thanx for info , i dont have to worry about seat post

just like riding a hardtail

i have posted another topic today if you can give me any advise on that it would be appreciated
