Has anyone used the shimano 959 pedals before and do they have their own cleat specific to them?

I think they are SPD compatible. Why would shimano make anything else.

The 959 use standard SPD cleats like all the other SPD pedals.
In my humble opinion (I work in the business and sell them) the 959 is not worth the money!
The PDM540 is the one to go for - light weight, fabulous price and the one I choose everytime - ebven when I could simply pick a 959 off the shelf for my own use.

Not all SPD pedals use the same cleats. Most do, but with a couple of exceptions. The main exception is the road pedals (SPD-R), but a couple of years ago, Shimano tried something new with the 858s. They had almost universally bad reviews, so the big S went back to its previous cleat design. Regular Shimano pedals use either of the following cleats: SM-SH51 (single release) and SM-SH55 (multi release). The 858s use SM-SH52 cleats.
Anyone care to clarify what the difference is between single direction release and multi direction is? I've never been able to tell.
The 959 is an awesome pedal... (But then so are the 540s - just a little difference in weight).
