Weird Proflex moments
« on: January 20, 2006, 04:33:35 am »
I just got to thinking of weird moments on my bikes.

One was on a ride to one of my favorite trails. Chumash trail in the Santa Susanna Mountains. I was on my Beast, my buddy on his Raliegh. I was ahead and rounded an uphill curve with rocks in it. My bike made a lot of chain clatter and had startled a rattler in the bushes at the top of the crown. Then my buddy rounded that curve and the rattler struck his front tire flatting it. After not seeing him for a bit, I ventured back to see him sitting down in disbellief. He said he saw it strike. Sure enough, there were 2 puncture marks in the side wall of the front tire. We fixed it and finished the ride. That year the brush was high and the rattlers could be heard when you went by.

One other was at Mission Point in the Santa Susannas. Myself on my beast and Eric on his diamond back were night riding, and on the way down the hill I was tearing up the trail in front. Same thing, I startled a cougar when I rounded a curve. It was laying in the brush on a rise above the fireroad and jumped to it's feet. Then Eric rounded the curve and came face to face with the cougar. He skidded to a stop about five feet from it and started screaming. I stopped and shined my headllight in his direction and saw the biggest cougar ever. It was 8 feet nose to tail. Well the llight must have blinded it and it fled. It cllimbed a 50 foot cliff in about 3 strides. Anyway Eric would have been dinner if he was alone.

I have spoken about the topless babe when riding my 957 last summer, and the broken rib on my Oz 2 years ago, and my broken shoulder and collarbone this fall on my 957.  But does anyone have any interesting Proflex/K2 moments?

Not long after getting an overhaul at my local lbs I could only ride my bike for about 50 metres before the back wheel would rub on one brake block or the other. So off I jump only to find that on turning the wheel the problem would right it self and the wheel was centred with no play.Jump on ride 50 metres and wheel would rub again......wtf....ride a few metres and stop...hmm threres a bit of play now.Turn the wheel slowly ...wow thres heaps of play now...enough to allow the wheel to rub on the brakes......turn the wheel another  few revs...problem gone.....what was the problem????

Having a guess here, some ball bearings left out one side of the rear hub ??? assuming its a cup and cone hub.

Oh oh oh, me too, me too! It's a good one!

BEFORE I bought Frank. [smiley=nod.gif] Yup, the TEST RIDE!!!!!

I was in Sport Check  [smiley=disbelief.gif] and I was looking at it thinking "I deserve it, i've been saving so well the past year". [smiley=laughing.gif] So I asked the young guy with "the shirt" about taking it for a test ride. I explained that there wasn't enough room in the area and I wanted to be SURE it fit properly. I asked if it could be arranged to ride in the mall area. "Don't worry, i'll be carefull!".

MOHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAAA! [smiley=evil.gif]

Yyyyyyup, I was carefull. I rode it to give them confidence I wasn't going to kill anyone. The Ex (not Ex at the time) knew SOMETHING was up.

MOHAHAHAHAAAA! [smiley=evil.gif]

I finished my test ride under the watchfull supervision of the Store Manager and the rep taking care of me. I returned quickly, stating "it's perfect, i'll take it!". The Store Manager shook my hand and went away. "Junior", the Ex and I headed downstair's (where they had the bike's) to do the transaction.

MOHAHAHHAHAHAAAAA! [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=nod.gif]

A quick look around and "i'll meet you down there" and I was OFF! Off my ROCKER!!!!! I rode right down the escalator!!! [smiley=laughing.gif] EVERYONE saw it. The looks on people's faces was absolutely PRICELESS!!!!! I just rolled down the stairs and glided to the cash register.

"Junior" (that's the guy with "the shirt", btw) looked like he just had a heart attack! "Wow, this thing is gonna be awesome!" I exclaimed, with a silly grin on my face.

MOHAHAHAHHAHAAAA! [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=laughing.gif]

Oh, I got a slap in the chest from the Ex when we got into the car. "You scared the CRAP outta me!". :P

I remember it like it was last week and treasure the memory fondly. I'm sure Frank does, too.... his first taste of freedom. ;)

How about riding with the owner of an LBS (and a former ProFlex dealer) one day...

He looks at my white 856 and says "What is that? An old ProFlex? What a piece of crap! ...You need to... blah blah... I'm not listening blah blah...

The son of a gun sold me a 455 back in '95 and told me "Now that's a race bike, son." He sold a ton of 756's and 856's back in the day... I guess that's kinda weird.
(I can only imagine what he would say to me about one of his $4,500 Santa Cruz's in ten years? The other LBS now has all my business.)

I had that wobbly wheel thing like Kiwi on my first weekend on my first 856. We were riding the lifts at Breckenridge. When I got home I discovered one of the rear wheel bearing races was cracked. The guys @ the LBS never did figure it out.
