24" rear wheel on Evo
« on: November 05, 2005, 08:34:54 am »
those of you with this set up [loko?] what size tyre can you fit on the back and any suggestions re make/model wheel/tyre. I am planning on using a 8.5/2.5  van rc on my med evo. I want to keep the cost down as this will be a fun/chuck around spare bike. Plan on using an old Mr T fork [5" double crown i think]. It all depends on wether i can get the frame repaired satisfactorily! Does anyone have a van rc they want to sell [at a ridiculously low price of course]

I don' think anyone has that setup. when you have it together and welded let us know. I have to say I'm worried that the bb will be to low for you. An extra quarter inch of shock length won't fix the bb height.

My advice: keep the 26's because the 5" fork will slack the head tube enough already. Still use the 8.5" I 2 I and run more sag. And finally if you can use a 170mm crank.

Good luck.

Have to agree with Ionit. But if you do go with the 24 inch wheel, and the bottom bracket drops too much, you could add a lengthening block like I did for my airshock.

Or if you went up to an 8.75 or 9 inch i2i you may find a sweet spot. (And more travel).

I wonder if this could be done to my 957? I could shorten the strut and graft a 9 inch i2i shock x 3 inches stroke. Hmmmm.

This set up has been used successfully in the past and i think the longer shock offsets the smaller wheel to keep the bb ht ok. the reason for the 24" is to allow enough clearence for the piggy back part of the rc shock, which is supposed to be a problem with small and med evos, but i just think it will look and feel good! I plan to use it for some of the short local rides i do where i tend to play around hitting drops and jumps, rather than xc/3hour stuff. I want to put some burly wheels and tyres on but figure there is not a lot of clearance on the swingarm.

Put the 24's on to see how it rides. It may take some getting used to but I guarantee it will feel right if you want it to.

Hey! I have that set up in my "discomonkey" and I love it! is like this; 24" wheel, I can easy use a 2.35 tire (cujo IRC, great all around tire) I've tried the panaracer FR fire (2.4) but is a little too tight.
my shock is a 8.5 i2i RC (propedal of course) that I picked up from ebay (lucky me it works sweet!) yes I change the cranks for 170's mm, plus a 130mm (5inches) manitou sherman firefly.
Is true that the BB is lower (14.3" which is not bad at all for an all mountain) but it gives a better feeling in turns and high speed descends, about going over obstacles...well you just got to get better and smoother at riding.  also the 24" rear wheel is good for sprinting out of turns and charging jumps, is very reponsive and easy to trow around. so do it!

A 14.5 inch bb height is a good height for a downhill bike your not breaking any rules for its catagory. Exept mabye the head angle.

well the head angle is 69, (aprox, not possitive about that) but the original shock is 8.25 i2i and the RC is 8.5, so there is some commpensation, also the SHERMAN has an sort of ETA, wich also help, but my riding style is "focus" on descends, and gnarly fast trails with jumps and drops, I dont really care about climbing. even though I can climb anything......not the fastest one in the way up, but "LOKOMONKEY" in the way down!!

WOW long time no see. this forum hasn't changed much. Anyhow....

To the point of the 24 on an EVO, that's what I ran on my F*n Monkey and I loved it. I ran a Kujo 24 x 2.35, weren;t alot of small width 24 tires when I had mine, but I liked the Kujo.

I also used a 7.875 x 2.25 Vanilla R instead of the longer 8.75's that alot of others used. I didn;t like the geometry changes. However the 8.5 sounds like a perfect compromise when coupled with the 24, if keeping the geo spot on is the idea. Still I'd prefer the shorter shock too slack it out more, figure my HA had to be around 67*.

Heres a pic of my F*n Monkey with the 24 (the shock in the pic is a 8.75 x 2.75, I didn't like it so it got swapped too a 7.875 x 2.25)....

very cool bike RED5!! is that a PSYLO in the front? I have a sherman firefly, wich is a bit longer, that's why I use a longer shock, besides the RC 'pro pedal can be soft enough so would 'feel slacker' or hard enough for climbing........I actually use it 'in the middle' and just deal with it! LOVE IT! 24" WHEEL IS VERY FUN!! FREERIDE=FUNRIDE  [smiley=furious.gif]

Yeah it's an 01 Psylo, came stock in that color awesome match for the Monkey.

Sounds like your building up a pretty sweet rig with the 8.5 shock and Firefly. Post up some pics when you get it built up.

Funny thing about the 24, I loved it for the first few years I rode, enough so that I bought a Big Hit. However, 2 more years down the line I;m not such a fan anymore. All future bike will def. have 26 ft/rr. Enjoy.  ;D
