Flaming 957 struts!
« on: November 05, 2005, 04:17:35 am »
What the #@*&&^)*( >:(.

Mano, mano, mano. So I was doing alittle mod on my 957 strut. Narrowed the shock mount some to weld 2 plates that will secure an air shock. Stripped the paint, tacked the plates in place, and then removed the shock.

Answered the phone a couple of times and went for the final weld. Started in on it running a weld on the sides of the plates, then started smelling burning paint. Some smoke, oh well. Welding the bottoms the strut bursts into flames. Then each of the tubes launch off the mounts, like rockets [smiley=bomb.gif]. Ok, three separate pieces are now on fire. Quickly threw them all into a quench bin, and sat down in amazement :-[.

Took me another hour to clean the parts, piece them together, finish the job.

WHO KNEW IT WAS GLUED :o! And those tubes are stupid thin, like .030 inches(or .75 mm for you metricators).

So watch it bubs, your bikes could erupt into flames if you aint careful.

Still smelling like burning epoxy [smiley=diaper.gif],

Terry

Oppps sorry I knew   :-[ :-[ :-[
also knew that there's a lacquer coating that if not
really thoroughly cleaned off the weld will be poor.

WHAT?!?!?!?! :o

I'm trusting my *** to GLUE?!?!?!?! [smiley=blankstare.gif]

Pics Terry? Inquiring minds want to see. [smiley=laughing.gif]

Actually, i've been noticing that the strut/shock is a bit flexible while i've been working on the bike. Not terribly re-assuring. Funny how this adaptor business has this effect on it all.

Andrew,

Well I welded the joint. No pics of the disaster.

Fitted the shock upside down and rode on the street for 10 miles. Tonight I will take the dremel to the frame so I can right the shock and access the SPV valve. But so far it feels great.

I will get pics when I get done. Going thru somewhat of a makeover.

Simon,

Did you use the old strut tubes on your mod? Or did you save the strut?

Yes, the little bit of epoxy was a pain to weld over, but I got it. We will see how those tubes hold up.

Wait til you see what I am doing to the crosslinks. Have too much time on my hands I guess.

CLEAN YOUR BIKE?

On the first mod I cut down the strut tubes and made a new strut using the shorter tubes,
on the second mod I just modded the top of a 855 strut.
had to clean my bike could barely see it through the mud :P
looking forward to seeing your x-link mods  :).
