I think it's 1 1/8, 1.5 is only 2 or 3 years old!

Not 1.5, 1.25...

However, I've never heard of a Proflex being a 1.25" headset size. In fact, the only ones I've heard of doing that are Gary Fisher and Klein (back in the day), and Cannondale (up until last year when they switched to the new 1.5" standard).

A 555 would probably be either a 1" or a 1 1/8" - I'm not sure which as that is right during the time when many manufacturers were transitioning from 1" to 1 1/8".

Anybody have a 555 or older bike that can verify the head tube size?

i would hazard a guess and say the 555 would be a 1".....755 wc and above were 1.125(1 and 1/8).but I may be wrong.
Does your  headset have a double nut arrangement directly above the head tube of the frame.?

The non shouting matti tells something about his bikes:

My 252 has a 1" steerer
My 952 has a 1 1/8" steerer
My 853 has a 1 1/8" steerer

So it will be the best, to wait until the frame has arrived and meassure it. I think the chances are quite equal.

If they already started going from 1" to 1 1/8" in 1992 (e.g. on the  952), then I'm almost 100% certain that any bike made 3 years later like a 555 made in 1995) would be the 1 1/8" steerer, making it compatible with almost all forks on the market now... My first MTB was a 1995 model, and it was a 1 1/8th el cheapo bike.

I've been following this forum for longer than I like to admit (going on 5 or 6 years now!), and I've NEVER seen any posts about a 1 1/4" headtube on ANY Proflex bike.  Remember, back in the day, Proflex was a very high-end bike company that used the latest technology. 1" headsets became obsolete in the very early 90's (at least on MTBs - I've still got one on my road bike!)  1.25" headtubes were experimental and didn't last more than a year or two for all but C'dale. Since then, 1.125" (a.k.a. 1 1/8") has been the industry standard. (The new 1.5" standard is mostly only for heavy duty freeride bikes and C'dale).

For what it's worth...

  sorry guys  ( on 2 counts )
firstly for making such a loud first appearance
       not so loud now  [smiley=disbelief.gif]
now for the really embarrising one :-[
its actually a 1992 752 that they have restored there   so all that frantic buying up of all the 1 1/4 stuff on e bay wont be needed       can allways put it back on though
so any way thanks for all the help
maybe i llcome up with a better one next time

How do I measure my headset?  I measured the outside diameter of the top of tube that the stem mounts to, and it is only 1".  Does that mean it's a 1"?  If it is, can I convert to a 1.125?  Does anyone know if I can put on the long (125-160mm) fork?  I know alot of ?'s but I don't know what I'm doing, so thanks.
