My finished ride
« on: July 31, 2005, 11:26:06 am »
Hello,

Decided to finally post pictures of my finished ride that I started back in September of 03 by removing paint from a K2-900 frame.  Didn't have a Digital Camera.  A friend was interested in the stripping process and brought his camera and had emailed me the picture after he had processed and scanned it.

Well, there's the finished bike. Kinda difficult to get good pictures of a polished frame though.  Those of you in the know realize this frame didn't ever come with the carbon swingarm.  I had one of the carbon prototypes bought off ebay to put on it and the bond on the front drive side pivot failed.  The swingarm pictured is a warranty replacement along with all the bits and peices for the proper pivot installation.  K2 took care of me right!  NO CHARGE!

Component spec:

                 Chris King rasta headset
                 Syncros Ti BB
                 Syncros Ti seatpost
                 Spinergy Spox carbon wheelset
                 Altek Brake levers (original spec)
Machine Tech Zero flex QR brakes
Control Tech bar ends (original spec)
                 Easton CT2 Carbon Handlebar
                 Kooka Stem
Kooka Cranks and rings (same as original but different color)
                 BeBop Stainless pedals
                 Speed Metal Ti crank extractors
                 Ringle QR skewer set
Vetta barbed wire & exposed heart saddle
                 XTR front derailleur
                 Sram ESP 9.0 rear derailleur
                 Sram ESP 9.0 xray shifters
Noleen NR-2 Shocks front and rear (want to get air to
lighten her up some more, but can't afford right now)
                 Sachs PC-80r chain
Oh, and decals made by me. (they almost look anodized!)
Tires vary, I have the Michelin Wildgripper Sprint S on now
I also use Nokian Boazoboena Ice blue once in a while.

Looking good  ;)
The frame came up really well.  What did you use to strip the paint off?? I was considering repainting my 4000 but after seeing your results i'm getting tempted to make it match my 955 & just strip it bare!

Did you have to clear coat the frame afterwards to keep the shine???

Thanks,

I used Dad's Easy Varnish/Paint remover.  Spray on, hose off, EASY! ;D Did two applications to get the stubborn stuff off.  Sounded like rice crispies popping as paint just crackled and popped off.  After stripping, I used a mouse sander with grits starting with 1500 stepping all the way to 2000 finishing paper.  Once sanded to that point I used Mother's Aluminum wheel polish which brought it to the mirror finish and has a protectant so I didn't need to clearcoat.  I do use a product called Wet Paint as a finish to further protect, but it just makes the finish feel slick!

Wow! Your overall color scheme is a flashback from the early days of anodized components! Everything a different color! Kind of considering stripping my own 5000 frame, but I think I'm too attached to the colors red and yellow (both my road and mountain bikes). Love your pedals. I've been looking for a good deal on a second set of those forever. I've got them on my road bike and can't imagine better ones.
K2 5000 Large w/Avid discs, Bontrager Race Disc Modified wheels, Manitou Minute, Swinger 3-way
K2 5000 Med ("wife's") w/Avid V's, Mavic CrossLink wheels, Manitou X-vert, Risse Astro-5

Really cool looking bike - I do love the colors as well.   Reminds me of the BMX days with my Haro Master - man those were the days.

NICE BIKE!    [smiley=beer.gif]

You would like my Wife's 957 then ;D. She has a rasta headset too, but red ano for cranks, levers, brakes, seatpost and skewers.

Those BeBops are awesome, I run them on our tandem for me also.  I need to get one more set for my road bike.

Jinder, glad you like it too.  Love the air you added to your 957!  Wish I could get some of those great photo shots you have!
