The Famous OP rear fender
« on: April 01, 2003, 03:41:51 pm »
Nearly done with building my Oz frame.  I wanted to make an OP rear fender as I like the one on my 5000.  I went to all the LBSs to find a Headland rear fender to build the OP custom rear fender.  Couldn't find one.  None of the shops could even find one in the catalogs to order.  Next I went to Ebay with no luck.  I finally checked out Nashbar.com.  Bingo!  Item name is Headland Back Scratcher, Part # HL-BS.  If you want one for your Oz, 5000, Evo with carbon swingarm, 4000, you better hurry.  Currently on sale for $8.88.  Check out OPs website to see a completed one.    [smiley=nod.gif] [smiley=nod.gif] [smiley=nod.gif] [smiley=nod.gif] [smiley=nod.gif]

please always be careful with the fender on a carbon swingarm to place some tape or such onto the swing arm, 'tween the fender and the arm, to prevent wear into the arm if it touches the cf where the fender may wrap over the mounting plate.

the website will be coming down shortly as i'm changing ip's so grab your pics, tips and tricks while you can as i've changed computers as well and all my old pics are on a hard drive in the back of a closet somewhere.

the headlands backscratcher modification was the best rear fender system i've seen for our style bikes - and it actually works like a fender should.  i've seen those headlands bs's in a variety of colors including lime green, blue and red.

OP,

Your site says the rear fender is for disc brake bikes-looks as though though it would work for vees too?  Are there more pics/descriptions elsewhere?

Thanks!

not really enough room there for v brakes as that's right where the fender sits - just in front of the wheel.

i mounted one of those 'gt' units once - even got it to go under the swingarm as well to protect the front shifter area.  but, my shimano shifters power thru the mud etc. and i just asoon hose her down when she gets that bad, so i canned the idea.

(the basic fender pic is in the gallery area for those who are interested in what we're talking about)

Hey OP,

Does that fender do anything to keep mud off of you, or does it just protect the bike and rear shock? I might try it if it keeps the mud off of me too! (I've stained one too many new jerseys that way!)

i always end up with a bit of mud on me - not much to mention tho -

i seem to get more on me from the front wheel mud getting chucked up in my face - hence the front fender routine as well during those wet times.

OP

works well in the rear tho - worth the 9 bucks and a little "DREMEL!" time.

To keep some of the mud off of me, I added an extension to the OP fender.  It mounts with bolts and finger nuts so it is easy to remove.  One of these days I will post a picture of it.
