New crosslinks on my 5000.
« on: February 08, 2005, 10:09:30 am »
FEB 2005 - Got these from a guy in Belgium for £65 inc postage.  [smiley=nod.gif]Got them within 4 days of him posting. Cheers Stoer-Event for posting the link. Test ridden them without a front brake but man they are plush!! Will rip the front disk adaper I made for my Elites and re-bond them to these. Made the spacers out of the old head tube of a salvaged scooter. Will probably invest in some proper spacers but fine for now. The critical measurement was 190mm so I guess these were originally off a Proflex 2000 or 3000, 1998.

Can't wait for the up and coming weekend ride.   [smiley=laughing.gif] [smiley=beer.gif]

Continued from my previous post copied below:

What with the bumpers fitted and the tall ULM I reckon they're off of a 2000/3000. However, If the critical measurment ended up as 190mm then I believe they must be a pair of OE "Longs"??
(was there a "Way-Big" 2000/3000?)

I reckon you could replace the Tall ULM with a standard ULM and thus reduce your steerer tube stack height by 13mm.

I posted the "Crosslink Installation Helper" http://idriders.com/proflex/files/crosslinkinstall.2.jpeg in the "files" section but couldn't seem to link to it....?

Aaaah! now I've done it!

====================
IMHO
I reckon they're either an After Market pair of '97 Crosslinks or came off of a 2000 or 3000.
The reason is because the ULM looks longer than a standard pair fitted to other Pro-Flex's in the factory.
If so, then the "critical measurment" will be 10mm higher (163mm)  than standard (153mm).
Assuming they're "standard AM's" and not "Long AM's" then they'll fit headtubes from 90-130mm. (Longs = 131mm to 160mm)
They did this to make the AM forks more flexible (not bendy!) in being able to be fitted to other makes of bikes with longer headtubes.
quote from "Crosslink Installation Helper"
"The aftermarket ULM is designed to be taller than the OE ULM in order to fit a wider variety of headtube sizes as well as many diffrent head sets."
Interestingly, thay also appear to have the "Upper Pivot Bumpers" which I think were only used on 2000's and 3000's but may have also been fitted to AM's.
Bottom line is, if they are After Markets then your spacer stack height may have to increase by 10mm
I'm sure you'll come up with something creative to use them for! <GRIN>

Junkster:

Well done! But £65? I believe he asked € 50? Does the shipping cost that much?

Jeroen.

Hi,
yeah, it was 79.25 euro, (50 plus 29.25 p&p) which is £55 plus £10 for the bank transfer fee. So actually the forks cost £55 inc P&P which is a bargain.

Just put the old postmount disc adapter on with JBWeld. Man it was hard to remove from the elite legs.

Will report on how it performs on the trail over the weekend.

thanks again,

cheers,

Colin,
you are probably right. Thanks for the info. Trouble is, aside from the increase in the elevation of the front and subsequent change in geometry, they seem to work ok. After I get a slightly longer seatpost and perhaps move the seat forward a little, it'll probably feel right. For the sake of 13mm I wonder if it would be worthwhile to get a regular ULM. That would probably be hard to locate and cost more than it is worth. I'll see how it rides this weekend.

Will keep you posted. Here is a full pic, what d'ya reckon about the raised geometry - I mainly do XC riding) - ?   [smiley=bomb.gif]

cheers,

Wow - did an 18 mile ride (ok only a 3rd was offroad) but what a diff the new xlinks make. The only other forks I owned which I was really comfortable riding was a set of 2000 Marzocchi Z1 dropoffs with something like 130mm travel. I love Xlinks - I didn't once get the feeling I was being launched over the handlebars downhill. I don't really do jumps so the 3" travel suits me fine. 225 in/lbs coil spring is ideal at the moment though I plan to lose another stone in weight so whether this will affect it I'll have to see.

The disc brake works well, but does squeal sometimes when going up hill, (though hardly when freewheeling - could be slight sideways movement I guess but the mount is rock soild).

cheers,
Dan
