857 or 957 or 959??
« on: January 06, 2005, 01:28:04 am »
Hello
I am writing from Portugal, so sorry my english.... :)

I bought a "new" bike, on second hand, last year.
I thought it was a Proflex 959, but when i saw on this site (its a very good site and i hope that you does not stop it..) the gallery where they are many Proflex 959,  i saw that they are very different from mine. I am not hungry because i think this bike is a very good bike and for me is enought.
The question that i want to put is how can i know what the model is this bike? What are the difference between the 857 and the 957?
I put here a picture from my two bikes.
the original color was not this blue...

If anyone could me help i thanks..

Fernando

Welcome to the site :)
That looks to me to be either an 857 or an 957(as I understand it there never was a 959 produced, some have re-badged there bikes as 959 as this is the number that would of been used if Proflex had carried on re-badging numerically) it does not make any difference anyway the 857 and 957 frames are the same, the only difference I believe between the 857 and the 957 was the component specifications, you still have aquired a great bike.

Howdy,

I have an Oz or a 4500/5500 carbon frame that I have badged as a 959 but that is only 'cuz I like it that way. You can see a pic of it in my gallery.

the 857 and 957 were pretty similar, except the stock 957 came with a carbon x~link fork and an Nr-4 rear shock. Some other parts were a higher end than the 857. Also the 957 frame was either assembled  in USA and may have been a different grade of aluminum, while the 857's were made in Taiwan..or something like that. Whomever knows please post...my memory is foggy.

The 857 came in a red and a much more rare purple (grape?) color while the 957 was silver/polished aluminum. That blue bike there looks like an 857 only because it would be a crime (in my opinion) to paint the polished look of the 957 frame.

Thanks for your answer of both.

I think that you are correct, because i heared that the original color of the frame was something similar of yellow (perhaps grape color??), so it could be a 857.

My rear shock (nolleen nr-2) is now ok, but someday i must buy a rear shock from risse.. (i read on the site that is the best rear shock for these bikes).

But now the bike is ok and i am very proud of that.

thanks again.

Ahhhh, there's my bike :)

THe 957 frame was made in the USA, and the 857 was made in Taiwan - that is correct.

Yes... my chain is messed up.  The bike is currently undergoing a full tune-up so it will be repaired soon.

I can tell you this... the 957 is one hell of a ride.  I have spoken to people that once had a 957 and they also say its one of the best bikes ever.  I just recently bought mine so I haven't really had a really good test ride yet...but I will soon.

no i am referring to the fact that jinder's bike appears to be in the big chain ring and the big rear cog. This is called cross chaining cos if you look at the line of the chain in this gear it has a big kink in it and if you really push on the pedals you will break the chain.Always try to keep the chain as straight as possible, only cogs 1 to 4 or so for the little chain ring and cogs 4-8(9) in the big chain ring.I use all the gears in the middle chain ring but my mate reckons thats too much but i am lazy.I have only ever broken one chain and that was trying to ride up a steep bank in a cross chain gear......
