Gripshift for 1998 proflex 4000
« on: August 03, 2004, 02:40:47 pm »
Hi All,
A few months ago the original LX Derailleur snapped it's pivot (lookded due to metal fatigue to me >:().  I tried a couple of replacements, an older XTR & a plastic looking Sram 9.0 but they didn't have the right angles.

So I bit my tongue and bought a new LX from my LBS.  After fitting it myself I got a lot of chain rub and poor shifting performance no matter what sort of adjustments I made.  So I bit my tongue again & paid for my LBS to refit it and tune it properly.  With the same crappy result!!! [smiley=turtle.gif] >:(

My cranks, chain wheels and bottom bracket seem fine so I don't think they are the problem.  So I'm considering removing the original trigger shifters in favor of a grip shift that I can use to "trim" the deraileur during gear changes.

Does this sound like a good idea to anyone else? Any feedback would be great

Cheers [smiley=beer.gif]

Bring it back to the shop!  They sold you the part and the least they can do is get it right, there's no reason they can't make it right and it should be done for what you paid them on the initial attempt to setup-this is pretty basic and besides they obviously need the practice.  That said the SRAM Rocket or Plasma line work with Shimano and are a plus for trimming the front derailleur.

Are you running 8 speed ???
if so did your LBS supply you with a 9 speed LX mech,
if so the 9 speed mech is slightly narrower between the cage plates than an 8 speed mech and although you can get acceptable shifting trimming can be a bit trickier, just a thought.

I am running an 8 speed casette.  The info that came with the LX said it was suitable for 8 & 9 speeds.  But I suppose suitable is not "perfect" in shimano's language.
The LBS basically told me that I had to put up with the chain rub & blamed it on everything but their work.  I've already had it out with them over the last couple of weeks.  There's no way I'm giving those guys any more business- I've just moved into a place with a garage, so I think I'll be doing all my own maintenance from now on!!

I'll jump on ebay and see if I can pick up a sram rocket or the like.  The original XTR shifter might be getting a bit tired anyway.

Then again maybe I should just rid myself of the front derailleur & try riding an 8 speed!!!
Thanks for your advice guys,

Front der. setup on the Evo is a frustrating endeavor because access is so difficult.  A tool to help adjust the set screws can be made by filing the head of a good sized nail flat on one side and use it as a right angle screwdriver.

I've gotten the best results with the front of the cage pointing ever so slightly outward and the height set just a hair higher than Shimano recommends.

I'm running an 8 speed with newer style derailleurs and grip shifts.  This setup works great, but I don't think new shifters will solve your problem if the derailleur is not adjusted properly.

Good luck!

I'm running a 9 speed set-up (XT front and SRAM 9.0 rear) with X.9 shorty gripshifts....it's AWESOME, trims well, can even tweak the rear derailleur a little but twisting in between the gears.
What type of Front derailleur is it?  If the space issue is anything like my 957 than make sure it is top swing not bottom swing and that the clamp is very low profile.  I had a guy from a shop sell me an SRAM X.9 front derailleur that was bottom swing, while if fit and I tuned it correctly, it couldn't stop the chain rub.  I'm mechanically inclined but a bike component newbie so I didn't know the difference plus, the guy who sold me the frame told me it shouldn't matter.  Anyway, sound like you need to figurew the derailleur out first, then worry about your shifters.
