Help - Re-bonding Aluminium to Carbon Fibre

In regards to my earlier post - New to Board - carbon fibre parts question

I finally managed to get a set of Spengle MTB-3 Carbon Fibre wheels off of eBay germany.

There is however a problem with the rear wheel in that the glue (?) that bonds the aluminium hub to the wheel has perished and the hub turns/rotates within the carbon fibre - you can actually push it out with your finger.    

How do I go about re-bonding this?  Will an epoxy work?  Or is there a special glue for this?  And finally, should I do it myself, or send it in to be done - if so who in the UK might do this type of thing?

Bonding should not be too difficult, the manufacturers will have used epoxy originally I expect.If you can separate the 2 parts to be bonded give em a good clean [thinners?] and glue them back together with a 2 part epoxy. I used one of those 'liquid steel' products before and it worked great on a swingarm/dropout. The overnight curing ones are supposed to be stronger than the 5 min ones I think. I don't know anything about those wheels or the stresses involved in them but I figure it should work.  :-/

Lo M8. If you want to do this yourself then obtain a wheel building jig because you want to keep the wheel perfectly straight whilst the epoxy goes off.
Otherwise send the wheel down to me in Plymouth.
The repair wont take more than a couple of days to do if i do it.
Otherwise if you are doing it you will need an (A pack of WEST SYSTEM and a small tub of graphite powder) you need the powder to give it colour (dark) you cannot just use the base and hardner as it will just run out again.
You need to mix it up to a peanut butter paste.
When you buy the pack which a good charndrly should sell buy some pumps with it because that you will be able to pump out the right amount of base and catalyst.
Remember it a one to one mix. and a small amount of powder.
Allow at least four hours to dry.
Degrease all surfaces with acetone or nail varnish remover but use the one with no added oils.
Wear rubber gloves, we dont want your balls to fall off. this stuff if it comes in contact with sensitive skin will have you scratching for weeks.

hey, I just found out from another forum that the Spengle wheels are now called Xentis wheels. they make a road model and an mtb model. the mtb wheelset is disc only and weighs 1580 grams (about what one Aerospoke does!! haha)
anyway, they have a 2 year warranty and look cool. could be a better choice for disc wheels for blue crush then the Aerospokes. I sent an email to find out if they are available in the states and for how much. Perhaps one of our european bros could find out how much they are over there.  [smiley=groucho.gif]
