Help! Dismantling Girvin Vector 1 elastomer stack
«

I have fitted the old Girvin Vector forks to my 855, fashioned yet another disc brake adapter for it, (check out my gallery under Junkster). I want to either temporarily rejuvinate the elastomers, (boiling or microwaving has worked in the past for a few weeks), or install a Risse genesis shock.
How do I remove the old elastomer stack? Is it simply just a case of removing the bolt connection to the stem, and then unscrewing the large anodised alloy blue nut under the alloy plate, directly under the elastomers? Also is installing the Risse shock quite an easy task. Any proflex rider out there who have done this? [smiley=blankstare.gif]

the elastomer shock comes out quite easily. The largw blue nut is a preload adjustment. You need to look at the bottom of the shock where it mounts to the fork. You will see that there is a axle there.Loosen the pinch bolts in the lower links and you can drive that axle out,If memory serves me correctly you may need to pivot the legs forward to be able to get enough room to get the "shock out the top.The beuty of the vector and crossssslink is it all comes apart with a few bolts.Look at the crosslink manuals yyyour girvin is very similar.

cheers,
I started tinkering with the preload adjusted and realised it had nothing to do with the removal of the stack. Came to the same conclusion and after undoing the pinch bolts, I tapped out the lower axel like you discribed. The unit came out in one. After examining it for a while, (reminisent of the primeval ape in 2001:a space odyssey, examing the bone) my limited brain finally figure and clamp bolt must be inside. Sure enough it was, though didn't have an Allen, (Hex) key long enough to reach inside the shaft -darn it! plus the 4mm bolt head looks packed with hardened dirt. In the end, I soaked the whole shock in boiling water. This softened up the elastomers, (unfortunately way too soft at the mo), so in a week or two they should have hardened enough to be a temp solution while I wait for my Risse Genesis. Thanks for yer help. [smiley=beer.gif]
